IUP Honors Cignetti at Annual Hall of Fame Inductions

INDIANA, Pa. – Headlined by the first team ever chosen for induction, Indiana University of Pennsylvania held its annual Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.

The ceremony came two weeks after the death of Frank Cignetti, who not only was IUP's athletics director from 1982 to 1998, but also the school's football coach from 1986 to 2005. Cignetti won 182 games in 20 seasons at IUP, and his 1990 and 1993 teams played in the NCAA Division II championship game. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013, the same year the football field at Miller Stadium was named in his honor.

"The ceremony was a good way to bring together many of the people who were impacted by Coach Cignetti at IUP," said Todd Garzarelli, IUP's director of athletics. "He was a driving force in leading IUP Athletics to being one of the best in the nation in Division II, and his influence can be felt in every area of our athletics program."

The class consisted of nine former student-athletes, one coach, and one team that represent nine different sport programs and comprise the department's 27th induction class. New to this year's class was the Coach/Administrator and Team categories, with Tony Medvetz and the 1993 football team, respectively, being the first to be inducted.
