No. 3/3 IUP men close out weekend strong with big defensive effort against Winston-Salem State

CLARION, Pa. – The third-ranked IUP men's basketball team continued their strong start to the season, building momentum with a 67-50 victory against Winston-Salem State at Clarion's Tippin Gymnasium.
IUP (2-0) had several standouts in their closing game of the weekend, which included Shawndale Jones with 20 points, Ethan Porterfield with 19 points, and Dave Morris with 12.
KJ Rhodes had six strong rebounds, and Morris grabbed five defensive boards for the day.
IUP opened the contest with a 6-0 lead, forcing Winston-Salem to take a timeout three minutes into the game. The Crimson Hawks led 37-22 at the half with a solid defensive presence, forcing Winston-Salem to 11 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
At the start of the second half, Porterfield hit a three-pointer off of an assist from Morris, continuing the same intensity from the first half. Moving the ball well on offense, Dallis Dillard knocked down a pair of three-point buckets, coming at 17:51 and 4:10 of the second half.
IUP shot 80% from the free-throw line and forced their opponent into 18 turnovers, converting 19 points off those miscues. IUP tightened down defensively after Winston-Salem made a brief run and cut the IUP lead to single digits.
The Crimson Hawks surrendered just four points over the final nine minutes of the contest.

IUP opens the home portion of the schedule, facing Bowie State on Wednesday, November 16th, at 7:30 p.m. at the KCAC.
The Crimson Hawks will recognize their 2021-22 national semifinalist team during a pregame ceremony.
