No. 3/2 IUP men use balanced effort in home-opening victory against Bowie State

INDIANA, Pa. – The third-ranked IUP men's basketball team led for over 35 minutes in a home-opening 76-55 victory against Bowie State on Wednesday night at the KCAC.

IUP (3-0) placed four players in double figures, including a game-high 20 points from Shawndale Jones. Tomiwa Sulaiman logged a double-double with 16 points (6-8 FG) and 12 rebounds for the Crimson Hawks, who shot 45.3% from the floor.

The Crimson Hawks used another strong defensive effort, holding a talented Bowie State (1-2) side to 35.6% shooting for the game and just 1-for-10 from three-point range in the second half. The Crimson Hawks tallied 11 steals, added three blocks and outrebounded the Bulldogs by 10.

IUP recognized its 2021-22 National Semifinalist team in a pregame ceremony, presenting the trophy to President Michael Driscoll and Vice President for Student Affairs Thomas Segar. IUP recorded its 40th victory in its last 41 home games.

Dave Morris fired in 13 points and Ethan Porterfield added 11 more in a balanced effort for IUP.

The Crimson Hawks held a 30-16 advantage in points off turnovers, starting much of its success of Wednesday on the defensive end.

Things went back and forth in the early going with IUP eventually finding a rhythm. Kyle Polce found Jones for a triple and a 12-9 lead at the 13:44 mark. It was part of a 9-0 run that included an and-one three from Polce.

Morris stretched the IUP lead to 11 with a jumper at 8:17, a double digit advantage that the Hawks held for much of the opening half. Poretfield made consecutive buckets as part of a 9-2 spurt about five minuets into the second half.

Off a steal, IUP zipped ahead with Portefield finding Sulaiman for a quick bucket, stopping a mini run from Bowie State. Sulaiman followed it up finishing through contact at the 4:54 mark for a three-point play and continued his impressive play with a putback dunk just over one minute later.

Nolan Burk knocked down a pair of foul shots, pushing IUP ahead by the 76-55 final tally.

Mark Bradshaw led the way for Bowie State with 16 points, all coming from beyond the arc.
