Hawks wrap up 4-game series sweep of Pitt-Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The IUP bats had another good day on Saturday, as the Crimson Hawks closed out a 4-game series sweep of Pitt-Johnstown with doubleheader wins of 6-2 and 14-7 at The Point Stadium.

IUP totaled 26 hits on Saturday, with eight going for extra bases - seven doubles, one triple. Eight different players combined for 17 RBI over the two games.

The Crimson Hawks have now won five in a row and improved to 19-15 overall. They remain one game out of first place in the PSAC West with a 10-6 division record.

The 14 runs in game two equaled the Crimson Hawks' season-high they originally set in game one of the series on Friday. Over the four games IUP hit .439 with 54 base hits, including 16 doubles and four home runs, and scored 47 runs.

This is IUP's first regular season sweep of a divisional opponent since winning all four against Clarion in 2018. It's IUP's first sweep of UPJ since 2017.

Game one
Freshman hurler Jimmy Tooley improved to 6-0 on the mound in the Hawks' 6-2 victory. He let up an RBI triple to The Point's spacious centerfield in the first inning and gave up a run-scoring double in the third. He faced two batters in the sixth inning and finished his day giving up six hits and two earned runs over 5.0 innings of work, walking two and striking out four. Eli Glass earned his fifth save of the season, tossing a scoreless seventh.

The Hawks' did most of their scoring in the second and third innings, bringing a combined five across. Austin Mueller brought two home with an RBI single in the third and drove in another run in the fifth. He went 2-for-4 with those three RBI. Harrison Pontoli went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Game two
IUP got up big early, bringing two across in the second, five in the third and one more in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead. Andrew Schell opened the scoring with an RBI double. Torrey Roper brought two in on a single in the third and had a run-scoring triple in the fourth.

The Mountain Cats made it a game by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth, but IUP came right back to score five in the fifth and one more in the sixth. Mueller (single), Nick Hess (double) and Peyton Johnson (double) had consecutive RBI hits during IUP's dominant fifth to make it a 13-4 game.

Starter Ian Logue had a no-hitter through three innings before UPJ scored four in the fourth. Sean Furlong picked up the win in relief and Ryan Berry pitched the final 2.2 innings.

Up next
The Hawks head down to Maryland to face Frostburg State in a single 9-inning game on Tuesday. They host Kutztown in a PSAC crossover doubleheader on Wednesday.
