GREENSBURG, Pa. - The IUP baseball team used a big first inning en route to a 7-2 victory over No. 13 Seton Hill in the opening game of a Saturday doubleheader in Greensburg. The Griffins took game two by an 8-0 score.
This was the fourth win over a top-25 in the last eight days for the Crimson Hawks, who are now 11-10 overall and 4-2 in the PSAC West. The division-leading Griffins are now 17-5-1 and 5-1.
Game one
The Hawks put the lead runner on when
Harrison Pontoli was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. Three batters later and with two on,
Peyton Johnson knocked Pontoli in on a single to left. After a walk,
Torrey Roper singled home Johnson and
Austin Mueller to make it a 3-0 game with just one out.Â
After a single by
Jake Cherry,
Colin Williams made it 5-0 on a single that brought Roper and
Nick Hess around. An infield single by Au'Sean Owens then scored Cherry to cap the 6-0 first inning.
IUP added another run in the second when Mueller scored on a wild pitch affter leading off the inning with a single.
Jeremiah Williams was masterful on the mound, going the distance to get the victory. In seven innings he struck out eight batters, scattered four hits, while the only two runs he allowed were unearned.
Seton Hill's runs came in the fifth inning with two outs. An outfield error led to the first run before a single made it a 7-2 game. After that fifth inning, Williams retired six of the next seven batters, giving up just one walk to finish out the win.
Game two
The Griffins scored five times in the third inning, two more in the fourth and once in the fifth. The Hawks managed just one base hit.
Up next
These two teams finish up their series on Sunday with two games at Dougherty Field in Indiana.
