Crimson Hawks swept by Gannon

INDIANA, Pa. - The Crimson Hawks gave up a combined 15 runs after the fifth inning as they dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Gannon on Saturday at Dougherty Field.

Gannon won by scores of 9-5 and 6-4, putting together a pair of seventh inning rallies for both victories. The Golden Knights swept the weekend series, also taking two games on Friday in Erie.

IUP fell to 23-22 overall and an even 12-12 in divisional play. The Hawks are now two games out of the final divisional spot for the conference tournament with one weekend to play. Gannon improved to 26-13 and clinched a tournament berth with a 17-7 divisional record.

Game one
The Hawks scored in the first inning and then relied on the arm of starter Jimmy Tooley, as he tossed four innings of shutout ball with just one hit allowed.

Gannon struck in the fifth, using a two-out single to bring two runs around and take a 2-1 lead. The Knights extended their lead with another run in the sixth. IUP grabbed the momentum in the bottom half, using a ground-rule double by Nick Hess and a sac fly from Austin Homer to tie the game at 3-3 heading to the seventh.

GU broke the tie with a leadoff home run in the seventh and proceeded to score five more runs on three hits to take a 9-3 lead. Branden Kanick hit a two-run homer in the bottom half but IUP only managed two more runners before the third out.

Game two
IUP opened the scoring again with a sac fly in the third as Markus Cestra scored to take a 1-0 lead. The Hawks scored three more times in the fifth, using an RBI single by Harrison Pontoli and a sac fly by Peyton Johnson to go up 4-0.

Starter Jeremiah Williams didn't give up a hit until the fourth and kept GU scoreless through six innings. Gannon got to Williams in the seventh, getting three singles and a sac fly before an error with two outs kept the game alive. The following batter hit a 2-run single to make it 4-3 before a 3-run homer gave the Golden Knights the lead. IUP then went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half to end the game.

Up next
The Hawks are scheduled to play two non-conference games this week - at Wheeling on Tuesday and at Frostburg State on Wednesday. They'll close the regular season next weekend with a four-game series with Clarion.
