Tooley tosses one-hitter, IUP Baseball seniors go out with a sweep

INDIANA, Pa. - One of the most exciting seasons in IUP baseball history had a thrilling finish on Sunday when the Crimson Hawks swept Clarion by scores of 1-0 and 7-2 at Dougherty Field.

The victories came on Senior Day as seven IUP seniors wrapped up their careers in the crimson & gray by finishing up a four-game season-ending sweep of the Golden Eagles.

The Hawks finished the season with a 27-22 overall record, improving by 25 victories over last year's 2-35 mark. They also finished with a 16-12 record in PSAC West play, tied for fourth in the division. They missed out on the final divisional spot in the conference tournament due to a tiebreaker. It was the highest divisional finish for IUP since coming in second in 2017.

Game one
Freshman phenom Jimmy Tooley had his strongest outing of the year - and one of the best in recent IUP history - with a one-hit shutout in the 1-0 victory. Tooley was dominant the entire game, losing out on his no-hitter with two outs in the top of the seventh inning on a hard hit grounder up the middle, just out of the diving reach of shortstop Markus Cestra

Tooley responded to that hit by striking out the final batter, one of his seven Ks on the day. It was his first complete game and first shutout of the season.

The only scoring of the game came in the first inning when Nick Hess flew out to center field, bringing Harrison Pontoli, who had walked and stolen a base earlier in the inning, home from third.

There were more errors (5) than hits (3) in the game.

Game two
IUP got on the board first with Cestra getting a sac fly in the second inning to score Colin Williams. The Hawks added five more runs in the third to take a commanding 6-0 lead, with Torrey Roper, Williams, Au'sean Owens (singles) and Davin Landers (double) each knocking in at least one run.

IUP added more one more in the fifth on a sac fly by Austin Mueller.

The Hawks had another strong outing on the mound with four pitchers combining to scatter three hits and two runs.

Jeremiah Williams earned the win, striking out one and giving up one hit in 4.0 innings of work. Tyler Diefenbach, Billy Welsh and Sean Furlong relieved Williams and threw the final 3.0 innings.
