Hawks dominate on day 1 of Atlantic Region Championships

Bloomsburg, Pa - The IUP women's tennis team got off to a great start at the ITA Atlantic Region Championships with all three doubles pairs advancing to the quarterfinals and five out of six singles players reaching the round of 32.

Vlachou and Graydon and #2 seeds Kirchtag and Kmoskova beat pairings from Bluefield State and West Virgina Weslyann 6-0 in their first round matches. #4 seeds Stalka and Heurta defeated Alexander and Skulsky of West Chester 7-5 to advance into the second round where they beat Martirosyan and Valcencia Guzman of West Liberty 6-2. Vlachou and Graydon took down the #8 seeds Dean and Murphy of Mercyhurst 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals where they will face fellow IUP teammates Stralka and Huerta. Kirchtag and Kmoskova took care of business winning their second round 6-0 against Pintar and Kush of Frostburg State.

Kirchtag got the first singles win of the day defeating Pastor of Fairmont State 6-2, 6-1, Graydon finished shortly after sweeping her opponent 6-1, 6-1. Stralka beat Isherwood from Slippery Rock 6-4, 6-2 and Kmoskova cruised to victory 6-3, 6-0 against Lancaster from Slippery Rock. Vlachou had a tough loss against the #14 seed of the tournament Martirosyan 6-2, 6-4, but Dunarova finished the day strong when her opponent retired after losing the first set 6-4.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow for the quarterfinals of doubles and the second and third round of singles.
