Crimson Hawks knock off California (Pa.) in straight sets

INDIANA, Pa. – Using a balanced offensive attack and some pinpoint serving, IUP women's volleyball knocked off PSAC West foe California (Pa.) in straight sets on Friday night at the KCAC.
 
The Crimson Hawks, who move to 12-2 on the season, took the match by set scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-15. Four players posted at least five kills for IUP, while Leah Henderson recorded six aces at the service line.
 
Caroline Walsh smacked down a game-high nine kills on a .273 hitting percentage. with Nicole Peterson and Stefania Anagostou adding five kills each.

Cal U (7-5, 1-2) hit negative for the night with 19 errors. Allie Droneburger led the way with five kills for the Vulcans.
 
The Crimson Hawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening set, keyed by two kills from Peterson, before racing ahead 12-3. The Vulcans could not cut the deficit to less than five as Anagnostou ripped three service aces as part of a larger 5-0 spurt.  The Vulcans staved off set point four consecutive rallies until Walsh capped the frame with a kill at 25-17.
 
IUP stormed out of the gate again in set two, jumping ahead 7-1 following six Vulcan errors. Henderson recorded an ace for a 12-7 lead and Walsh capped a surge with a kill for a 20-13 advantage. The Crimson Hawks rounded out the second set with four of the final five points, moving ahead 2-0 in the match with a 25-18 triumph.
 
The Vulcans held the early momentum in the third set with leads of 5-3 and 6-4 before the Crimson Hawks found their footing. A 10-2 swing pushed the Crimson Hawks back in front comfortably with kills from four different players. Simay Memisoglu fired down her lone kill of the evening for a 22-11 advantage and the Crimson Hawks capped the sweep with three-straight to close the match.
 
IUP held a 13-4 edge in aces on the night. Henderson picked up a double-double with 25 assists and 12 digs for the hosts. At the net, Lauren Valentic posted four block assists with Memisoglu adding three of her own.
