SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The IUP men's basketball team racked up 25 offensive rebounds and held a big advantage in second chance points as part of a 96-84 victory against Shippensburg on Friday evening.
IUP (3-3, 1-0) posts its seventh straight win to start Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play, while head coach
Joe Lombardi moved to 14-3 in PSAC openers during his tenure. The Hawks finished 49.4% from the floor, placing all five starters in double figures.
Garvin Clarke and
Ethan Porterfield posted a team-high 21 points apiece with
Dallis Dillard adding 20 points in a stellar outing. Dillard added 10 rebounds for a double-double effort, adding three steals and two assists with a big first half effort that kept the Hawks in front.
Damir Brooks posted 13 points (6-8 FG) with eight offensive rebounds, six of which came on the offensive end.
Jaylen Stewart chipped in 14 points with five rebounds and four steals in a well-balanced effort for the Hawks.
IUP had more offensive rebounds (25) than defensive rebounds (21) and held a 24-8 margin in second chance points. For Shippensburg (3-2, 0-1 PSAC) Markus Frank poured in a game-high 40 points (14-21 FG) with nine rebounds, while Michael Dunn logged 24 points off the bench with some big shots in the opening half.
The first half saw both teams trading runs throughout with IUP eventually able to stretch its lead to 52-41 at the break. The Hawks shot above 50% throughout the half, finishing the opening 20 minutes 53.7% from the floor.
IUP opened the game on an 18-2 run and kept the Raiders at bay despite multiple blitzes in the first and second half. The Hawks used some timely scoring, offensive rebounds and second chance points to remain ahead into the second half.
Shippensburg trimmed the deficit to 18-10 before IUP opened the margin back to 15 points (42-27) with a steal and score from Dillard at the 5:48 mark. The Raiders counterpunched again, spurred by some timely baskets off the bench from Dunn that eventually whittled the deficit back to 47-41. The Hawks logged the last five points of the opening half with a 5-0 surge.
Shippensburg got back within four (52-48) early in the second half on a driving basket from Frank. IUP responded with a 10-2 run that put the visitors ahead double figures again, which included a triple for Dillard. Shippensburg was able to get back within single figures on a few occasions with IUP responding each time to regain the advantage.
IUP posted nine of the final 14 points to secure the 96-84 victory. The Hawks held a 60-36 edge in paint points and posted a season-high 12 steals.
