IUP ranked sixth in PSAC Dixon Trophy standings following fall sports slate

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- The IUP department of athletics ranks sixth in the 2023-24 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Dixon Trophy standings, released Thursday.

Released through the fall sports season, IUP is third among conference schools in men's sports with an average of 13.50, while the women's teams slot tied for 12th in the league with an average of 8.00. Overall, IUP boasts an average of 10.36 through the fall seasons, ranking third among PSAC West schools.

The Dixon Trophy is awarded at the end of each academic year to the league's most successful program based on conference playoff and/or regular-season finishes. Standings are compiled based on average score for all PSAC championship sports each school sponsors. Equal to its total membership, each conference sport champion is awarded 18 points and a descending point value is given for respective place finishes. The second-through last-place values vary depending on the number of teams that sponsor the sport.

IUP logged 16 points in men's cross country with men's golf notching 15 points behind their runner-up finish in the conference championship. Women's volleyball paced the department's women's sports with 13.5 points as the PSAC Quarterfinalists; the NCAA Tournament appearance does not factor into these standings.

East Stroudsburg is in first place through the fall sports season with two-time defending champion Gannon slotting second. Kutztown (12.17 points), Slippery Rock (11.71), and Shippensburg (10.71) round out the top five of the current standings, just ahead of IUP (10.36).

Introduced in the 1995-96 academic year, the award is named in honor of F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., former chairman of Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education's Board of Governors.

The next update of the Dixon Trophy standings will be released following the conclusion of the winter championship season in early March.
