IUP softball unable to solve Slippery Rock pitching in doubleheader setback

INDIANA, Pa. – IUP softball opened the home and conference portion of the schedule on Tuesday afternoon, falling in both ends of the doubleheader to Slippery Rock by scores of 7-3 and 8-0.

IUP (9-10, 0-2) mustered a combined three hits during the doubleheader as Slippery Rock (11-9, 2-0) had two starters fire complete games in the circle. Meghan Grill accounted for two of IUP's three hits, collecting one during each game.

Meanwhile, Bella Bucy saw time in the circle during both games for the Crimson Hawks. Amanda Fischer entered in relief during game one, while Tori Long got the pitching start in game two.

Kelsi Anderson racked up her eighth win of the season for SRU in the first game, collecting 10 strikeouts and surrendering two IUP hits. Alexsa Hurd was equally impressive in the circle and at the plate for the visitors, allowing one hit with nine strikeouts in game two, also driving in six RBI on four hits.

Hurd pushed Slipepry Rock ahead 2-0 in the first inning of the opening game with a homer to center. Paige Truax raced home on passed ball in the third inning as IUP trailed 4-1. The Crimson Hawks continued cutting into the Slippery Rock lead in the home portion of the fourth with Grill and Truax each scoring in a sloppy inning.

Hurd used a bases-clearing double to hand Slippery Rock all the run support it needed in the third, capping the game with a two-run homer to right in the seventh before finishing the game with a clean frame in the circle.

The Hawks drew four walks in the nightcap with Madeline Miller, Jordan Sylvia, Tess Smiley and Delaney Patella all working patient approaches.

Paige Truax and Lexi Dawson each worked a pair of walks in the initial game of the day. Anderson needed 160 pitches to close out the complete game for SRU as IUP drew eight total walks in game one.
