INDIANA, Pa. – IUP women's lacrosse could not hold off a charging Walsh squad in a 7-6 double overtime loss on Tuesday at Miller Stadium.
IUP (1-2) appeared to have the game clinched in the initial overtime session, but a rebound scramble from
Sarah Reustle was disallowed. Walsh (2-2) took advantage in the second overtime session as Melinda Maers sliced in for her 10th goal of the season.
Reustle finished with two goals, five ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls as the reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Week.
The Hawks opened up a 5-1 lead, peppering Walsh starting goalkeeper Kathleen Mendanhall with four goals in the opening 15 minutes. The Cavaliers turned to freshman Rebekah Bargeron, who steadied the ship, allowing just two goals the remainder of regulation while adding nine timely saves.
The Crimson Hawks held a 28-22 edge in shots, which included a 12-6 advantage following the opening stanza.
Meanwhile,
Maddy Schramm gets tagged with the tough-luck loss after collecting seven saves throughout the duration of the contest. The Hawks were stout defensively throughout the game, forcing 13 caused turnovers and limiting Walsh to 17-24 on clearing attempts.
Leah Moyer and Reustle registered a pair of goals each for IUP, while
Jordan Kulp passed out two assists.
Rachel Knight was disruptive with four caused turnovers on the evening with

Moyer posted two of the initial three goals in the opening quarter for IUP, which lead 3-2 about 13 minutes in.
Emme Mass and
Kathryn Burke closed out the scoring in the opening half, providing the Hawks with a 5-2 advantage.
Walsh used a stretch of three unanswered goals spanning the entire third quarter and nearly 10 minutes into the fourth to work the score tied slowly but surely. Grace Santee got the run started before Chloe Tatlow eventually netted consecutive markers, knotting the score at five.
Reustle finished off a Burke pass for the go-ahead goal at 6-5 with just 3:22 left in regulation. The Cavaliers responded again, this time with Maers finding the goal at 1:08 in the fourth.
The Hawks dictated possession for much of the opening overtime session, but Walsh stayed the course before Maers registered the game-winner.
