INDIANA, Pa. – The Indiana University of Pennsylvania baseball program nullified a powerful Mercyhurst lineup, winning game one courtesy of clutch hitting late (4-1) while riding the arm of Mark Edeburn to a game two shutout (4-0).
Senior Jeremiah Williams allowed a solo shot in the first inning before clamping down, recording all but the final out in a superb showing. His final line read 6.2 frames of one-run ball, four hits allowed, one walk surrendered, and eight punchouts to even his record at 4-4.
Jason Madrak closed the book on the opener, getting out number 27 on a pop out to Zach Miller at first base.
Edeburn one-upped his teammate the only possible way he could, spinning a complete game seven-inning shutout, averaging a strikeout per frame with a season-best seven, while yielding no runs nor walks over seven scattered base hits. The senior improved to 5-3 with the dominant day.
As for the senior hitter that shone brightest in their spotlight, Markus Cestra was one of only two players to drive in multiple RBIs with a pair, smacking two singles, walking, and stealing a base.
Peyton Johnson notched a trio of hits including a double, lofted a sacrifice fly, scored twice, and legged out a stolen base.
Zach Miller was the other student-athlete to log more than one ribbie, also driving home a pair with a sac fly as well as a triple.
Harrison Pontoli was consistent, going 1-of-3 with a run scored in each ballgame while differentiating via a triple in the nightcap plus a walk in the first matchup.
Due to impending rain, the Hawks will need to wait until Sunday to go for the sweep of Mercyhurst when they battle near Lake Erie at 1 and 3:30 p.m.
