Hawks bounce back, take control in the fourth quarter in 12-9 win against Gannon

INDIANA, Pa. – IUP women's lacrosse built a lead going into halftime and then used a fourth quarter charge in securing a 12-9 win against Gannon on Friday afternoon at Miller Stadium.

IUP (8-4, 6-1) nearly completed a fourth quarter comeback last time out against Seton Hill, this time using the final 15 minutes to mount an 11-8 and ultimately a 12-9 advantage. Gannon (3-9, 3-4) had a three-game conference winning streak snapped, responding back in the third quarter and eventually tying the game at eight.

IUP held a wide margin in shots on goal and was once again relentless on the defensive end in the clearing game. The Golden Knights took an early lead and hung around, using an efficient attack into the second half while erasing a three-goal deficit in the third.

Chantal Jimenez fired in four goals with Brenna Whiteside, Kathryn Burke and Emme Mass notched two markers each. Jordan Kulp distributed four assists and Rachel Knight grabbed four ground balls with a pair of caused turnovers.

Things went back and forth throughout much of the first half before IUP closed the second quarter with three straight tallies for a 6-4 edge. Mass started the four-goal run for IUP that spanned into the second half, with Kathryn Burke, Whiteside and Leah Moyer finding the back of the net for a 7-4 advantage.

Gannon answered with a run of its own, firing in three consecutive markers and leveling the score at seven. Caroline Stevens and McKenna Woodworth capped the surge for the Golden Knights, who battled to bring the score even. Charlie Hunter rounded out the third quarter scoring at the 1:07 mark, answering a Mass marker just over 20 seconds prior.

The Hawks started the fourth with strong defense, eventually turning it into a 4-1 edge over the final stanza under the direction of Caitlin Morrow. Jimenez started the avalanche at 8:09 before Macenzie Haragos followed suit with a slashing marker at 5:33. Jimenez converted again, this time racing down the right side before slotting a shot home for her 15th goal of the season and an 11-8 advantage. Jimenez cashed in for her third goal of the quarter with eight seconds left for the final 12-9 margin.

Maddy Schramm made four timely saves for IUP between the pipes, while Haleigh Manning collected eight stops for the Golden Knights.
