IUP women’s lacrosse boasts program record four IWLCA All-Region honorees

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – Four members of the IUP women's lacrosse program earned selection to the 2023 All-Atlantic Region team, announced Wednesday by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA).

All second team selections, junior midfielder Sarah Reustle earns all-region recognition for the second consecutive season. Additionally, sophomore attack Kathryn Burke, senior defender Maggie Marsteller and senior defender Sami Shutt received second team honors.

The four selections are the most in program history for a single season and marks the ninth time since 2012 IUP has had at least three student-athletes on the all-region teams. All four honorees were named All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) First team selections earlier this month.

This is Reustle's second consecutive all-region honor as a junior. Missing the second half of the season to injury, Reustle made her mark through 10 games in 2023. She racked up 29 goals, 35 points, 30 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers, entering her senior season fifth in program history with 160 draw controls.

Resutle has shifted into one of IUP's most potent offensive options after starting her career as a defensive midfielder, logging 68 goals and 87 points through 40 career games. She is one of 14 players in program history with at least 100 career ground balls, also rankings eighth in caused turnovers (61).

Burke was tied for second on the team with 33 goals in 2023. The sophomore was named team MVP at attack, leading the squad with 56 points, 77 shots and adding 15 ground balls this season. Burke had multiple goals in nine contests this season, including a five-goal outing against Seton Hill on April 5.

Marsteller, who recently announced her return to IUP for a fifth year, receives her first career all-region honor. She started in all 18 games, leading the team with 41 ground balls (2.17/game) while ranking second on the squad with 22 caused turnovers.

Marsteller surpassed 100 career ground balls and 50 career caused turnovers in the same game, coming against Seton Hill on April 26. She ranks ninth in program history in career caused turnovers (54) and tied for 12th in ground balls (106).

Shutt started all 18 games for IUP defensively, ranking second on the team with 36 ground balls, and fourth on the team with 17 caused turnovers. The defender broke into the top 20 in career ground balls, accounting for 78 throughout her time as a Hawk.

Shutt and Marsteller were two anchors for an IUP defensive unit that rank ninth nationally in scoring defense (8.33).

These student-athletes are now eligible to be named to a national IWLCA All-American team. The IWLCA will announce the 2023 All-American teams on May 18.
