IUP soccer falls to Mercyhurst

INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to a potent Mercyhurst squad on Saturday afternoon at South Campus Field.

IUP (2-3-1, 2-3) held some early possession but trailed 1-0 at the half. Mercyhurst (6-1, 5-0) kept its unbeaten conference record intact, adding two more tallies in the second half in the 3-0 triumph. Playing a young lineup against a fast-paced aggressive Mercyhurst unit, IUP went back and forth into the second half before a pair of late tallies put the game out of reach.

Mercyhurst held an 18-9 edge in shots as Vanessa Berlin collected six saves for the Crimson Hawks. Julia Csernyik and Hannah Scardina recorded early chances within the initial three minutes of the contest, part of some sustained early possession for the Crimson Hawks.

Scardina had three shots on the day, while Elle Smith added two more of her own.

Emily Mijares, Maycen Anthony and Anna Clark all found the net for the Lakers. The first and last goals for Mercyhurst came off scrambles in traffic in the box. The Lakers found the net in the 19th, 68th and 78th minutes.

The best chance for IUP came in a flurry in the 70th minute, which included consecutive chances from close range. Taylor Serrano's initial shot was saved by Mercyhurst goalie Maddie Elbro, who later denied Smith's rebound chance. Adi Myers pushed a third consecutive shot just wide before the Lakers capped the scoring a few minutes later.
