IUP settles for draw at Edinboro

Box Score EDINBORO, Pa. – The IUP women's soccer team mounted a two-goal lead into the second half but ultimately settled for a 2-2 draw against Edinboro on Friday night at Sox-Harrison Stadium.

Hannah Scardina and Elle Smith each scored their fifth goals of the season, coming in the 33rd and 63rd minutes. Smith added an assist for IUP (3-3-2, 3-3-1), as did Emma Hays on the second goal of the night. Edinboro (2-4-3, 2-3-2) countered back with tallies by Emily Vogel in the 69th minute and Teghan Watkins in the 85th minute.

Edinboro held a slight 12-9 edge in shots and a 7-5 margin in shots on goal. Meanwhile, IUP edged the Fighting Scots in corner kicks.

Vanessa Berlin logged five saves in goal for IUP, which kept Edinboro bottled up until well into the second half.

IUP stormed out of the gate, dictating possession throughout the contest. IUP nearly broke through on its first shot of the game on a ball that nearly squeaked over the line. The Hawks also had a potential third goal called off by an offside in a relatively dominant display at times.

Scardina found the net on IUP's fourth shot on the contest at 32:59, finishing off a feed from Smith for a 1-0 advantage. Hadley Sleith fired one off the crossbar in the 43rd minute as IUP went into intermission with the lead.

Maddy Orr and Hays logged chances in the early stages of the second half as IUP pressed forward. Berlin made a low save on Jenna Jackson in the 58th minute, keeping the Scots off the board before Smith doubled the IUP lead about five minutes later.

Edinboro eventually responded with its first goal of the game before adding more chances in the latter stages of the second half. Watkins broke through for the equalizer at 84:36.

Smith had one final shot attempt sail right off the restart, while Berlin collected her fifth save of the evening at 86:32 in the contest.
