Hawks post strong showing on opening day of IUP Fall Invitational

INDIANA, Pa. – Hosting their lone event of the fall season, the IUP women's tennis program impressed across the board in the team's fall invitational, held at Maple Street Courts on Saturday.

IUP was one of four women's teams competing in the two-day invitational, joining Mercyhurst, Morgan State and Salem (W.Va.). Additionally, Morgan State, Mercyhurst and Salem (W.Va.) contested matches on the men's side.

Overall, IUP won four singles matches and five total doubles contests on the day.

"It was great to play some exciting tennis on our home courts for the first time this season," IUP head tennis coach Andrew McGlashen said. "The ladies started out strong in doubles, winning five of six matches against very strong opponents."

Ming Deewajee and Dani Ramos got another chance at the Mercyhurst duo of Kayla Dean and Rosin Murphy in a rematch of the ITA Atlantic Region Doubles final, this time emerging victorious by a 7-5 count.

Elsewhere in doubles, Dewajee and Ramos opened the day with a 7-6 (3) win against the Morgan State duo of Lauryn Hall and Averiana Mitchell. Katy Graydon and Lydia Vlachou also knocked off Hall/Mitchell with a 6-4 win, one of two doubles victories on the day for the pairing.

Hannah Beitat and Lina Teleshun rolled to a 6-1 win against Salem's pairing of Daria Korsakova and Melanie Coric.

In singles action, Dewajee, Graydon, Ramos and Beitat were all victorious.

Dewajee held on for a 6-2, 7-5 win against Evdokimova from Morgan State. Graydon continued the winning ways for IUP with a 6-1, 6-4 win against Morgan State's Lauryn Hall. Ramos defeated Sara Bertolez from Mercyhurst (4-6, 6-1, 10-6), while Beitat picked up a win against Korsakova by scores of 6-1, 6-1.
