INDIANA, Pa. -- Edinboro's Hayley Sims stuck the go-ahead basket from the right corner with six seconds remaining as IUP fell 70-69 on Saturday afternoon at the KCAC.
Sims poured in a game-high 28 points (10-13 FT) for Edinboro (9-7, 4-4), which never led by more than three points in the contest. IUP (11-4, 7-3) dropped its first home contest season with the setback, placing four scorers in double figures.
Teirra Preston,
Rahmena Henderson and
Nyshae' Weaver posted 12 points each, while
Maria Cerro added 11 for the Hawks. IUP held a 47-37 edge in rebounds and a 20-6 advantage in second chance points. Weaver reached her conference-leading rebounding average with nine boards, while Preston and Cerro posted seven rebounds apiece.
In a game that featured nine ties and 19 lead changes, IUP opened the contest on an 8-0 run before the Fighting Scots battled back. Edinboro stayed within striking distance throughout, snapping a three-game slide while leading the matchup for just 5:23. Morgan Gentile added 19 points for the visiting Fighting Scots and Maura Suman posting 14 of her own.
IUP posted seven steals in the opening half and took a 38-34 lead into the intermission. Shooting 45.4% (5-11) from deep, the Crimson Hawks held the edge in rebounding with another balanced output.
IUP scored the initial eight points and opened the game with an 11-3 lead before Edinboro chipped away near the end of the first quarter. A triple from
Grace Centrulla made it 11-3 and
Macie Jarrett capped the scoring in the first with a three from the right wing against her former school.
Centrulla finished the afternoon with six points, seven rebounds, two steals and three blocks. Her second block of the day pushed her to 100 career blocks in her collegiate career, spanning her time at Mercyhurst and IUP.
Both sides traded the lead throughout the second quarter as neither side led by more than four. Foul shots from Weaver widened the margin to the halftime score of 38-34. Suman pushed Edinboro in front on two occasions with a three at 5:31 (43-42) and a foul shot at 4:19 (45-44) in the third stanza.
Sims surpassed 1,000 career points for the Fighting Scots in the second half. Henderson finished a go-ahead score for a 60-55 advantage in the fourth before the Fighting Scots eventually took their first lead of the quarter about four minutes later with a triple from Gentile. The Hawks took a two-point advantage with a foul shot from Weaver before the Fighting Scots converted on their final possession.
With time winding down, an off-balanced attempt at the buzzer did not go for the Hawks. IUP suffered just its ninth home loss in the last 42 contests at the KCAC, struggling from distance on the afternoon.
