Radford’s record setting day, big second half effort lifts IUP past Slippery Rock

INDIANA, Pa. – IUP guard Bryce Radford set a program record for three-point field goals in a single game, converting nine times from behind the arc in a 77-64 victory against Slippery Rock at the KCAC on Saturday.

IUP (13-5, 10-2) used a key second half run to move ahead by 10 and never looked back, keyed again by some hot shooting from the outside. Radford, who previously tied the program record with eight three-point baskets earlier this season against Shepherd, broke the record today.

Radford went 9-for-14 from long range, converting seven of those trey balls in the second half while finishing with 27 points. He logged 21 points after halftime, playing 30 minutes on the afternoon. Ethan Porterfield finished with a second consecutive double-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Garvin Clarke just missed a double-double with 18 points, nine rebounds and six assists, while Jaylen Stewart added 16 points and four assists. IUP knocked down 10 three-point field goals in the second half, finishing with 14 on the day.

KJ Rhodes passed out five assists, including some timely ones as IUP built its lead in the second half. IUP head coach Joe Lombardi moved into sole possession of third on the PSAC all-time wins list (413), moving to 30-7 lifetime against Slippery Rock.

SRU (8-10, 6-6) has not won a game against IUP in Indiana since 1992, coming in with wins in four of the last five contests. Jomo Goings fired in 18 points with seven rebounds, while Maceo Austin added 15 points and six rebounds in 34 minutes.

Slippery Rock sliced the deficit to three with a layup at the first half buzzer, trailing 30-27. The Hawks shot 41.4% from the floor in the first half, holding the lead for just over 15 minutes in the frame. Clarke had a game-high 12 points in the first half and Austin had 11 points of his own for SRU.

Radford converted a pair of go-ahead triples in the first half at 10:27 and 9:28 for the Hawks. Tightly contested throughout, IUP used a 9-2 run in mounting its largest lead of the half (7). A high-arching setback shot from Porterfield made it 26-19 with 4:23 left, concluding the IUP surge.

SRU slowly chipped the deficit to three by the end of the half with a late putback from Bobby Clifford. Porterfield moved to sixth all-time on the school's all-time scoring list, now with 1,644.

IUP rattled off a 9-0 blitz early in the second half to surge ahead by double figures, which turned out to be the decisive stretch in the game. After a triple from Radford, IUP got back defensively before Porterfield collected a steal and found Stewart for a transition basket.

Clarke moved IUP ahead by 10 with a driving basket at the 17:15 mark. SRU battled back within single digits on two occasions before Radford pushed IUP ahead by double figures for good with a trey at 15:43.

SRU did not get closer than 11 points the rest of the way as IUP maintained the lead with some strong outside shooting. Radford's record-breaking three pushed IUP to a 67-50 advantage with just over five minutes remaining in the game.
