Late fourth quarter score dooms Crimson Hawks

EDINBORO, Pa. – The 25th-ranked football program drops a close game against a resilient Edinboro team, allowing a game losing touchdown with eight seconds left to play at Sox Harrsion Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Despite being in possession of the ball for 37 minutes and dominating the box score, the Hawks were unable to hold off the Fighting Scots in the final minutes of play. They converted 20 first downs, totaled 129 rushing yards, threw for 209-yards, and converted seven of 13 third downs. IUP faced 10 penalties for a loss of 98-yards and lost a fumble.

IUP quarterback Karst Hunter completed 19 of 28 passes for 209-yards, his longest being 38-yards to tight end Cole Laney. Hunter rushed for a total of 36-yards, including a six-yard rush into the endzone, and a two-point conversion. Hunter threw two interceptions and got sacked for a three-yard loss.

Maurice Massey recorded six receptions for 67-yards and a two-point conversion, Cyair Clark followed with four for 42, and Hilton Ridley had three for 34. On the ground, JD Younger rushed for a total of 66-yards and found the endzone twice. Nick Andrasi made a 49-yard field goal but missed an extra point attempt.

On the defense side of the ball, Garret Cox recorded an IUP high of 13 total tackles, Noah Johnston had nine and was a part of a tackle for loss, and Isaiah Towler contributed five of his own.

IUP deferred the toss giving Edinboro the ball to start. The Fighting Scots scored on their first drive with a 17-yard run and 9:56 left in the first. IUP responded with a 10-minute drive, with seven first downs and a six-yard rushing touchdown from Karst Hunter to start the second quarter.

After both teams punted, Edinboro scored again increasing their lead to 14-6. IUP responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive, with big plays in the air including a 38-yard strike to Laney and three catches from Massey for 33-yards.

Edinboro finished out the half with a 2-minute drill that did not result in any points as IUP's Terell Williams blocked their 44-yard field goal attempt. Heading into halftime IUP trailed Edinboro 14-12.

IUP started the second half with a successful field goal attempt of 49-yards from Andrasi, claiming the lead.

Edinboro punted the ball from their own 30, which Kalen Fraizer muffed allowing Edinboro to recover it at the IUP 36, getting great field position. Following a pass interference call they set up at the IUP 2, leading to a two-yard touchdown rush.

To start the fourth quarter, Younger found the endzone and Massey caught Hunter's two-point attempt, making it a three point game.

After a series of three punts and a turnover on downs, Edinboro had the ball at their own 33 with 1:34 on the clock. After converting two fourth downs, the Fighting Scots scored the game winning touchdown with eight seconds left. IUP had four seconds to make something happen, but Hunter's pass intended for Massey was intercepted.
