PREVIEW: IUP women's basketball gears up for first road contests this season at Shepherd and West Chester

INDIANA, Pa. -- The IUP women's basketball program kicks off road games this weekend traveling to matchup against PSAC opponents Shepherd and West Chester. The Hawks matchup against the Shepherd Rams on Friday at 3:00 p.m. followed by the West Chester Golden Rams on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

TIPOFF NOTES

>> The Hawks are riding a five game winning streak, just one of two teams in the PSAC that are still undefeated.
>> Nyshae' Weaver was named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on November 25 after her performances against Lock Haven and Shippensburg. Against the Bald Eagles, she recorded an impressive double-double with 19 points, 20 rebounds, two steals, and a .500 shooting percentage (8-16). Against the Raiders, she contributed 11 points, seven rebounds, five steals (a personal best at IUP), and shot an efficient .714 from the field (5-7).
>> The Hawks are currently averaging 72.8 PPG, 49.8 RPG, 13.6 APG, 8.8 SPG, and 3.8 BPG. 
>> IUP is shooting .460% from the field and .286% beyond the arc.
>> They are holding their opponent's average to just 41.0 PPG, .291% from the field, 14.8 turnovers per game.
>> IUP has scored more than 70 points in three games this season.
>> They notched a season high of 16 steals against Shippensburg, followed by 11 against Penn. State Beaver.
>> The lead scorers for the Hawks are Weaver and Shamia Strayhorn. Weaver is averaging 12.8 PPG and Strayhorn with 12.6 PPG. Weaver ranks 22nd in the PSAC and Strayhorn ranks 23rd.
>> Grace Centrulla leads the team with eight blocks and is shooting .333% beyond the arc.
>> West Chester has two players who rank in the PSAC top 10 scoring. Kozicki ranks fifth averaging 18.4 PPG and McTamney ranks sixth averaging 17.9 PPG.

SHEPHERD AT A GLANCE / SERIES HISTORY

Shepherd's overall record is 3-5 and 0-2 in the PSAC with loses from Seton Hill and California (Pa.). The Rams are 3-0 in home matches this season, coming from non-conference opponents. They are averaging 68.1 PPG, .413 FG%, 39.3 RPG, 12.5 APG, 9.0 steals per game, and 1.3 blocks per game. Their lead scorer is Kara Wehner who is averaging 11.6 PPG, 3.4 RPG, shooting .425% from the field, and leads the team with 10 steals.

IUP has matched up with the Rams on 11 occasions and has won seven of those meetings. The teams have traded wins the past five meetings. The Hawks defeated the Rams last season 80-52, a 28 point margin.

WEST CHESTER AT A GLANCE / SERIES HISTORY

West Chester's overall record is 2-5 and 0-2 in the PSAC with losses from Slippery Rock and Edinboro. The Golden Rams are undefeated in home matches so far this season from two non-conference wins. They are averaging 67.6 PPG, .399 FG%, 37.7 RPG, 13.9 APG, 11 steals per game, and 1.6 blocks per game. Their lead scorer is Michelle Kozicki who is averaging 18.4 PPG, 8.6 RPG, shooting .500% from the field, and is second on the team with 15 steals.

This will be the team's 18th time meeting, IUP currently holds a five game winning streak against them. The last time the teams matched up was in December of 2022, the Hawks defeated the Golden Rams 73-63. 

ALL AROUND WEAVER + STRAYHORN

Junior forward Weaver currently leads the Hawks in numerous categories and sits in the top rankings in the PSAC. She ranks 22nd in scoring, averaging 12.8 PPG. She is second averaging 11 rebounds per game. Weaver is shooting .583 from the field putting her in third place in the PSAC. Weaver has scored double-digits in three games this season, she recorded a high of 19 points against Lock Haven. She grabbed 14 defensive rebounds against Lock Haven and totaled 20 rebounds on the night. 

Senior guard Shamia Strayhorn leads the team averaging 30.4 minutes of playing time per game and ranks 24th in the PSAC. Strayhorn is shooting .426% from the field, leads the teams with five three-pointers, .706% from the free throw line, averages 12.6 PPG, marked six steals, and two blocks.

FRESH OFF THE BENCH

IUP has utilized players off the bench throughout this season. Fourth on the team in scoring is Madison Zavasky who is averaging 7.8 PPG, and is second with 5.0 RPG and steals (6). Lily Jordan is another key player off the bench who is averaging 21.0 minutes per game. She is shooting .467% from the field and is averaging 4.8 RPG. Marin Miller has posted five blocks, six assists, 4.4 RPG, and 7-for-10 at the free throw line.
