WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The IUP women's basketball team dominated each quarter, securing a 69-53 victory over West Chester on Saturday afternoon to wrap up their weekend road trip. IUP improves to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the PSAC.
Nyshae' Weaver led IUP with a double-double, posting 18 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 8-11 from the field and adding a block.
Shamia Strayhorn and
Grace Centrulla contributed 13 points each. Strayhorn hit two three-pointers, grabbed three rebounds, and dished out three assists. Centrulla led the team with three three-pointers, collected four rebounds, recorded three assists, and tallied three blocks. Lilly Jordan added nine points, while Janiera Scott scored seven.
Ellie Wilkerson chipped in with two steals.
IUP shot 51.9% from the field and scored 30 points in the paint.
Centrulla tipped the ball back to Weaver to start the game. A pass from Centrulla to Strayhorn marked the first three of the game. Two free throws by West Chester tied the game at 15 with 36 seconds left, but Lilly Jordan's buzzer-beater put IUP ahead 17-15 entering the second quarter.
IUP started the second quarter with consecutive baskets. Strayhorn grabbed a defensive rebound and passed to Weaver, who made a fast-break layup. Jordan nailed her second jumper at the 7:07 mark, stretching the lead to 10 points. West Chester responded with a 12-2 run, tying the game at 27 with three minutes left in the half. Weaver scored five points down the stretch, giving IUP a 35-27 halftime lead.
The teams traded points early in the third quarter. Strayhorn's three-pointer at the 5:16 mark extended IUP's lead to 12, their largest margin at that point. Centrulla closed the quarter with a three-pointer at the 2:05 mark, making it 50-36. Strayhorn accounted for 10 of IUP's points in the quarter, while Centrulla added five. The Hawks limited West Chester to just three field goals during the third.
In the fourth quarter, Weaver hit a free throw and a jumper with just under seven minutes left. Moments later, Centrulla blocked a shot. Jordan drained a three-pointer at the 5:02 mark, extending the lead to 15 points. The teams exchanged points in the closing minutes, with IUP maintaining control and sealing the 16-point win.
