GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The IUP softball team dropped a 4-1 decision to Fairmont State in windy and snowy conditions at Glenville State's Sue Morris Complex Classic on Saturday morning.
IUP (4-1) mustered just two hits on the day as the offense went cold. Fairmont State moves to 6-1 on the young season, while freshman starting pitcher Delaney Haller pushed her record to 4-0 with a complete game.
Not to be outshined was IUP's first-year starter,
Kendall Young, who collected some key strikeouts early in a complete game effort.
Maddie Griffin and
Jaycee Haidze had the two hits for IUP, while
Delaney Patella collected three walks.
Patella has walked 40 times in her IUP career, moving her into a tie just outside the top 15 in program history through just 53 games.
IUP moved ahead 1-0 on an infield hit from Haidze, plating
Paige Truax for a 1-0 advantage. Fairmont State scored two runs via sacrifice flies, one on an error and one on a solo home run in a tough-luck outing for Young.
Young navigated some trouble on the basepaths early, finishing with a career-high six strikeouts.
The Falcons plated two runs in the third for a 2-1 lead. Kamila Slayton homered in the sixth before the Falcons added one more sacrifice fly for the team's sixth consecutive win.
IUP's originally scheduled game against West Virginia State set for Saturday night was rescheduled to Sunday, February 25 at 6:00 p.m.
