IUP Athletics Preview: February 26-March 3, 2024

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Tuesday, February 27

With plenty of returning talent back on the roster for IUP in 2024, head coach Brenna Gallagher Roan and the women's lacrosse program opens the new season on Tuesday afternoon at Miller Stadium against Georgian Court. IUP was picked second in the 2024 PSAC West Preseason Poll, welcoming back all four 2023 IWLCA All-Region honorees from a year ago in Sarah Reustle, Kathryn Burke, Maggie Marsteller and Sami Shutt.
 
Reustle (160 DC) and Chantal Jimenez (262 DC) are both among the top five in program history in career draw controls. The Hawks welcome back their top seven goal scorers from a year ago and also bring back plenty of all-conference level experience on defense, led by Maggie Marsteller and Sami Shutt.

IUP looks to lock up a bye to the PSAC Quarterfinals with a win this week at California (Pa.) on Wednesday. Already in the playoffs, IUP secured its eighth 20-win season in the last nine campaigns with a 57-42 victory against Slippery Rock last weekend.
 
IUP clamped down in the second half, slowly pulling away for the team's fifth win in a row. Rahmena Henderson was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week, averaging 18.0 points 6.5 rebounds and 4.2 steals in 37.5 minutes across two victories.
 
The Crimson Hawks finish out the regular season on Saturday afternoon with Senior Day against Clarion.

The difficult stretch continues for the IUP men's basketball team, visiting a top-10 nationally ranked opponent in California (Pa.) this Wednesday before hosting Senior Day to finish out the regular season on Saturday. The Crimson Hawks had a strong start at Slippery Rock, opening up a double-digit lead early before running out of steam in an 81-62 setback to SRU.
 
The Crimson Hawks have secured a playoff berth and are in position to host a PSAC First Round matchup on March 4. Garvin Clarke racked up 30 points and 12 rebounds in a double-double effort, part of an incredibly productive stretch for the IUP point guard over the last 12 games.
 
BASEBALL (0-3)
Saturday, March 2

The IUP baseball program returns to the diamond, facing its second opponent of the 2024 season with a trip to Institute for a doubleheader with West Virginia State over the weekend. The Crimson Hawks fell victim to a potent UNC Pembroke offense, dropping all three games in the series to start the season on February 16-17.
 
Jimmy Tooley earned PSAC West Pitcher of the Week honors for his work in relief against the Braves, logging three strikeouts in three innings of work on the mound. David Kessler is hitting .333 (3-9), while Harrison Pontoli boasts four RBI in just three games.
 
Following the DH with WV State, IUP is set to make its home debut the following weekend with a three-game slate against Hillsdale on March 9-10 at Dougherty Field.
 
SOFTBALL (7-1)
Saturday, March 2

Fresh off a busy six-game week, the IUP softball team heads back to West Virginia for a doubleheader with Shepherd on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson Hawks recently finished out three straight victories (Glenville State, WV Wesleyan, WV State) on February 25 at the Sue Morris Complex Classic at Glenville State, pushing the team's record to an impressive 7-1 mark.
 
Madison Pikula has reached base safely in seven straight games for IUP, leading the team with a .500 average (11-22) with one double and two triples. Delaney Patella has drawn 11 walks and scored 10 runs for the Crimson Hawks in the middle of the lineup.
 
Kendall Young anchored a strong pitching week for IUP, which collected some key outs in big situations last week. Young is 3-1 on the season with 14 strikeouts.
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS (3-2)
Saturday, March 2
vs. Fairmont State – 5:00 p.m. – Summit Tennis Academy (location subject to change)
 
Following a weekend off, the IUP women's tennis program returns indoors for a regional matchup with Fairmont State on Saturday at the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown. The Crimson Hawks pushed NCAA DI Duquense to the limit in a 4-3 defeat last time out on February 18.
 
Weather pending, IUP may move the match outside to the Maple Street Courts. Any updates will be posted on the women's tennis schedule page.
 
Katy Graydon is 11-3 in singles play and a combined 19-6 across singles and doubles play, leading the IUP lineup in 2023-24. Ming Deewajee and Dani Ramos are 12-6 in doubles action.
 
Hannah Beitat and Lydia Vlachou have won three consecutive singles matches for the Hawks.
