WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The IUP softball program dropped its opening game of the day against Bentley, finishing out the afternoon with a 3-2 win in eight innings against Lewis at The Spring Games in Florida.
Bentley (4-7) pushed across three runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach at the start of the day.
Paige Truax and
Tess Smiley posted a pair of hits and one RBI each for the Hawks in the first game.
IUP (11-5) used another strong pitching effort from first year right-hander
Kendall Young in the win against Lewis. She tossed all eight innings for another complete game, allowing just one earned run with five punchouts.
Game One: Bentley 6, IUP 2
All the offense for both teams came after the fourth inning as both starting pitchers were efficient early on.
Delaney Patella had two more walks in the first game of the day, moving her career total to 46 through 62 games played. Her 46 walks move her into a tie for 11th in program history, matching Stephanie Mill (1990-93) and current IUP associate athletic director Sam Goettman (2007-10). Patella is one walk shy of a tie for 10th.
Smiley knotted the score at one with a triple in the fourth inning. Down 3-1, Truax punched a single to center, plating
Jordan Sylvia as IUP got back within 3-2. With two more hits on her birthday, Truax brings her career total to 95 hits in 99 career games.
Bentley put the game away with three runs in the seventh inning.
Elizabeth Kasper was dealt her first defeat of the season in the circle, pitching 6.2 innings for the Hawks.
Game Two: IUP 3, Lewis 2 (8 Innings)
Five different players registered a hit for the balanced Crimson Hawks in game two. The timely offense and Young's fourth complete game of the season lifted the Crimson Hawks to the second extra-inning victory of the spring break trip.
Kelly Szolek posted her first collegiate hit and RBI for the opening run of the game in the second inning, bringing home Patella on a 1-0 single to left. Lewis (10-4) evened the score with a run in the third before Young limited the damage.
The Crimson Hawks pushed across two runs in the eighth, needing both after Sylvia's single on a full count made it a 3-1 game. Lewis added a run to make it 3-2 in the home half of the eighth. Young again delivered with a big-time pitch, forcing a flyout with the bases loaded to close out the victory.
Young has registered five or more strikeouts in three outings this season for the Hawks.
