BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — The IUP baseball team racked up plenty of offense in a 14-4 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Bloomsburg.
IUP (3-3) posted 13 of its 14 runs after the fifth inning, getting another strong starting pitching effort before pouring it on down the stretch.
Jake Black went five scoreless innings, allowing five hits with five strikeouts in his first victory as a Crimson Hawk.
The Hawks spread the wealth offensively with six players recording two hits on the day.
David Kessler and
Elijah Dunn posted three RBI each for the balanced Crimson Hawks, who recorded a season high in runs.
Bloomsburg (2-9) posted run runs in the home half of the seventh, but never got back within striking distance after a 10-run outburst from the Hawks between the fifth and sixth innings.
Black was efficient through five innings, allowing just one extra-base hit on the day. Dunn, Kessler,
Harrison Pontoli,
Ethan Schimony,
Ricardo Aponte and
Au'sean Owens all posted multiple knocks.
Cooper Baxter,
Sebastian Rosado-Guindin and
Casen Sandri finished out the final four innings in relief on the mound. Sandri fired two strikeouts in the ninth, part of 11 on the day for the IUP pitching staff.
Pontoli opened the scoring with a solo home run in the third, while Dunn smacked a three-run blast to left center for an 11-0 margin in the sixth.
Teague Hoover led off the fifth with a walk, scoring on a one-out single from Pontoli. Kessler doubled the IUP lead to 4-0 as IUP took control. Aponte's double pushed the IUP lead to 6-0.
The sixth inning started in a similar way with Hoover leading off the frame with a walk and moving to second on a well-placed bunt from Owens. With the bases loaded,
Blaise Zeiders was hit by a pitch, moving every runner up for a 7-0 edge.
Dunn broke the game open with his three-run shot to left center. The Huskies countered back with four runs in the seventh, unable to chip into IUP's sizable lead.
The Hawks tacked on three more runs in the top half of the eighth, highlighted by a Schimony double to left center.
