Hawks can’t overcome second quarter slump in loss to No. 15 New Haven

SPARKS, Md. – The IUP women's lacrosse team was outscored by seven in the second quarter, unable to recover in a 17-6 loss to No. 15 New Haven on Friday afternoon at Tierny Field.

IUP (1-3) kept pace with New Haven (3-1) through the first quarter before the Chargers took command of the game in the second. Down 10-3 at the half, IUP battled back with three goals in the third quarter in a losing cause.

The trio of Chantal Jimenez, Maggie Boyle and Kathryn Burke registered a pair of goals each. Jimenez added two assists, five draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover in an all-around effort.

Maggie Marsteller picked up three ground balls for the Hawks. Katie Schenk fired in five goals with an assist for the Charges, while Caitlin Seleny and Cameryn Antler posted three points apiece.

UNH held a 35-24 edge in shots, including a 13-4 margin in the second quarter. The IUP goalkeeping duo of Maddy Schramm and Mia Courtalis combined for six saves.

Trailing 3-1, a pair of player-up goals from Boyle at 4:33 and 1:21 of the first brought IUP back even. The decisive seven-goal swing for New Haven handed the Chargers a comfortable 10-3 lead at the intermission.

The big second quarter was part of a larger 12-1 run for UNH that spanned around 25 minutes of game action. Jimenez and Burke found the goal in the last 2:30 of the third as IUP tried to battle back.
