IUP baseball returns home with 9-2 win against West Liberty

INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP baseball team returned to Dougherty Field for a nine inning nonconference matchup against West Liberty, overtaking the Hilltoppers with a 9-2 victory on Wednesday.

IUP moves to 16-9, while West Liberty slips to 7-24 on the season. The Crimson Hawks racked up those nine runs on 15 hits, scoring each of the initial five innings of the afternoon. On the mound, IUP used six different pitchers that limited WLU to two runs on eight hits.

David Kessler went 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored, while Harrison Pontoli added his fourth homer of the season with a leadoff blast in the fourth inning. Elijah Dunn and Brady Yard also finished with multiple knocks in a big day offensively for the Crimson Hawks.

Sebastian Rosado-Guindin struck out seven over four innings of work in his first collegiate start. Addison Clymer and Cooper Baxter added at least one inning of scoreless relief in a rotating door on the mound.

Andrew Sicinski ripped a single to right center that scored Pontoli for an early 1-0 lead. Kessler scored in the second inning on an error before Teague Hoover cracked a two-run single to center, pushing the lead to 5-0.

Kessler was an offensive catalyst again in the third inning, scoring Dunn on his first collegiate triple. Kessler came home for his second run of the day on a Yard single in the next trip to the plate.

Pontoli stretched the IUP advantage to seven with his fourth inning home run, the 15th of his IUP career. Pontoli is now seventh in program history in career hits (183), tied for eighth in career home runs and tied for fourth in career RBI (124).

Aponte rounded out the scoring with a two-run double in the fifth inning, widening the IUP margin to 9-1. The Crimson Hawks have won seven of the last eight meetings with West Liberty since 2012.
