GREENSBURG, Pa. – Jake Black won a pitcher's duel in game one, helping the IUP baseball program claim the series with a 3-0 victory in the opening game of the day against Seton Hill. The Griffins countered back with a 10-6 win in the nightcap.
IUP won its second conference series of the season, moving to 20-9 and 11-5 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. With the split, Seton Hill moves to 23-12 overall.
While the games were played in Greensburg, IUP served as the home team for the doubleheader.
Game One: IUP 3, Seton Hill 0
A 98-pitch complete game for Black came at an opportune time, securing the series win for the Crimson Hawks. IUP strung some hits together offensively in the sixth, posting all three runs in the frame.
Black notched his first complete game with the Crimson Hawks, allowing just four hits on the day with four strikeouts and two walks. Black was perfect through three innings and allowed just one baserunner through the opening four innings of the day.
The Bethlehem, Pa. native moves to 4-2 on the season with his second consecutive outing that spanned seven innings.
Brady Yard continued his solid approach at the plate with the go-ahead single in the sixth.
Robert Carfagno doubled the IUP lead with an infield hit before
David Kessler rounded out the scoring at 3-0 in the sixth.
Ricardo Aponte and Carfagno posted a pair of hits each. SHU starter Aidan Layton was strong with six innings of work on the mound, fanning six.
Game Two: Seton Hill 10, IUP 6
Another back-and-forth affair, Seton Hill pulled ahead for good with seven runs in the sixth inning. IUP surged ahead 6-3 in the fifth inning before the Griffins salvaged the final game of the series with a big sixth.
The Crimson Hawks mustered four hits in game two, making the most of their limited chances. IUP took a 2-0 advantage on an error along the Seton Hill infield in the second. SHU chipped away and regained the lead at 3-2 before the Crimson Hawks responded in the fifth.
A two-run double for Carfagno and two-run triple for
Elijah Dunn pushed the Hawks back in front 6-3. SHU broke through in the top half of the sixth, taking the lead for good at 10-6.
Nathan Mankoski surrendered three runs in 4.2 innings on the mound for IUP. Max Mandler recorded three hits for the Griffins, while Owen Sabol added a double and home run.
