CALIFORNIA, Pa. – With momentum swings for both sides throughout the day, the IUP softball team drooped a doubleheader against California (Pa.) with losses of 6-5 and 14-11.
IUP falls to 22-17 overall and 8-11 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western division. California (Pa.) improves to 15-15 overall and 13-8 in the league.
The Vulcans delivered a walk-off win in game one before racking up nine runs in the fifth inning of game two.
Game One: California 6, IUP 5
IUP registered single runs in three straight innings to start the day, adding two more in the seventh before the Vulcans countered back with a walk-off victory.
Jaycee Haidze and
Delaney Patella posted three hits apiece, while
Madison Pikula recorded one of her two RBI with a game-tying sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Patella opened the scoring with a run-scoring single in the first as the teams' traded ties throughout the contest. Both IUP's runs in the seventh inning were unearned as the Crimson Hawks worked to manufacture the game-tying run.
Brianna Sersevic won the game with a sacrifice fly in walk-off fashion for the Vulcans.
Game Two: California 14, IUP 11
With eight combined pitchers utilized in game two, IUP and Cal U traded blows in a big offensive showing. The Vulcans took the lead for good with nine runs in the fifth inning.
IUP made one final push with four runs over the last two innings, unable to make a large enough dent in the Cal U advantage. Pikula,
Jordan Sylvia and
Paige Truax had two hits each for the Crimson Hawks.
Pikula scored three runs in a big day for the Crimson Hawks. Sylvia's triple to center field pushed IUP ahead 7-5, the final lead of the contest for the visitors.
Caleigh Rister finished with five RBI for the Vulcans.
