INDIANA, Pa. – IUP women's lacrosse opened up a big advantage early before working in the remainder of the lineup in a 17-5 victory against Edinboro on Saturday afternoon at Miller Stadium.
IUP pushes its overall record to 7-7 and 6-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western division. The victory comes at a point in the season where wins are at a premium for the Crimson Hawks, looking to keep pace for a playoff spot in a compacted PSAC West.
The 17-5 victory matches an IUP win at Edinboro (2-11, 0-8) earlier this year on March 23. The Crimson Hawks had 11 different players register a point, led by seven assists from
Kathryn Burke. IUP was warming defensively on the day, causing 21 turnovers while collecting 31 ground balls in a collective effort.
Chantal Jimenez posted four goals and reached 150 points for her collegiate career. She also posted five draw controls, continuing to inch closer to the program record of 345.
Sarah Reustle had a pair of goals, one ground ball and four caused turnovers as an active force in the midfield.
Jimenez enters the stretch run of the season with 337 draw controls, while Resutle is one draw control shy from 200 in her career.
Maggie Kilgallon and
Kim Carpentiere posted four ground balls each for IUP. Edinboro got one goal one assist, five ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls from Rylee Jones.
IUP scored nine of the game's initial 10 goals and got the running clock started early in the second quarter. The Crimson Hawks scored the opening six goals of the afternoon with Reustle and Jimenez logging two apiece in the early onslaught.
Burke distributed the ball well throughout the day, posting an assist on each of the first four IUP tallies. Off a scramble sequence in the midfield, Jimenez deposited her third goal of the quarter with just four seconds remaining for a 9-1 IUP margin.
Julia Steere started the running clock for IUP with a player-up goal about four minutes into the second. Working a more deliberate pace, the Hawks took a 13-2 lead into the intermission.
The defensive intensity did not drop off for the Crimson Hawks into the second half despite working in several lineup configurations. Jimenez and Whiteside recorded the only goals of the stanza in the third quarter.
Mia Martorano registered her first collegiate goal in the fourth quarter before Steere rounded out the IUP scoring at the 7:18 mark. The Scots chipped away with two more goals over the final 5:15 of the contest.
