INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP softball team dropped a doubleheader to second-place Gannon, falling by scores of 9-6 and 12-2.
Gannon elevates to second place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western division at 18-6 in the league. IUP has some work to do in a loaded final week of the regular season at 10-15.
The Hawks have seven games left, including a halted game that will pick up in the fifth to finish out the regular season at home. IUP is seventh in the division but one game off the fifth and final playoff spot in the PSAC West.
Madison Pikula and
Delaney Patella moved to number one and two in single season runs scored following Monday's rescheduled doubleheader. Patella is also one walk shy of setting the program's single season walks record at 73.
Game One: Gannon 9, IUP 6
Gannon jumped ahead 7-0 in the opening game before the Crimson Hawks made things interesting with three runs each in the fourth and seventh innings.
Tess Smiley posted two hits off the bench, while
Maddie Griffin and Patella scored two runs apiece.
In the circle,
Olivia Hillegas entered for the final 3.1 innings, striking out three. Trailing 7-0,
Jordan Sylvia got the Hawks on the board with a two-run single back up the middle.
Paige Truax sliced the IUP deficit to 7-3 with an infield single. Gannon added some insurance in the sixth for a 9-3 margin. IUP pushed across three more runs in the home half of the seventh, falling 9-6.
Game Two: Gannon 12, IUP 2 (5 Innings)
Gannon raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and did not look back, putting the run-rul decision away with four more runs in the fifth. Patella, Sylvia and Truax accounted for the three IUP hits in game two.
Patella mashed her ninth home run of the season in the second inning.
Sara Tailford, pinch running for Sylvia, raced home in the seventh inning for IUP.
Elizabeth Kasper and
Amanda Fischer combined for 4.2 innings of relief in the circle for IUP.
