IUP softball nabs important doubleheader sweep of Pitt-Johnstown

INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP softball program took care of business in methodical fashion on Friday afternoon with a Senior Day sweep of Pitt-Johnstown, recording wins of 16-0 (five innings) and 8-3 at Podbielski Field.

IUP (28-22, 14-16) also got some help around the league and moves into the final postseason spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western division. IUP and Mercyhurst are tied at 14-16 in PSAC play, battling for the final playoff spot.

Both teams conclude the regular season on Saturday with IUP hosting Seton Hill and Mercyhurst hosting Gannon. The Crimson Hawks recognized their lone senior, Amanda Fischer, between games.

Game One: IUP 16, UPJ 0 (5 Innings)
Kendall Young tossed the first no-hitter of her collegiate career, striking out eight over 97 pitches. The IUP offense broke through in a big way with 16 runs on 16 hits.

Jordan Sylvia set the tone for the day with a three-run homer in the first inning. She finished the opening game with four hits, six RBI and three runs scored. The big offensive effort pushed Sylvia to the program's single season RBI record of 54, surpassing Megan McCormick (2011).

Overall, five players recorded multiple hits for IUP in game one. IUP racked up five runs in the third and eight more in the fourth inning. Madison Pikula's double lifted IUP ahead 8-0 in the third before her second double of the day made it 14-0.

Jaycee Haidze and Delaney Patella added sacrifice flies in the fourth to round out the scoring at 16-0.

Game Two: IUP 8, UPJ 3
Elizabeth Kasper dealt a hard-earned complete game victory with four punchouts and 105 pitches in the nightcap. The Crimson Hawks took an early advantage of 4-0, later tacking on two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Paige Truax pushed all the momentum back to the Hawks with a double down the line in the fifth. Ahead 6-2, Patella cracked a double of her own in the sixth.

IUP drew seven walks as a team, including two from Maddie Griffin.
