QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The IUP softball program had its 20th Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament run come to a close with a 6-1 loss to Bloomsburg in an elimination game at Veterans Park.
Bloomsburg advances to day two after playing three games on Wednesday, getting a pair of wins with All-PSAC East First Team pitcher Callie Sowers in the circle. Sowers whirled a no-hitter in the opening game of the tournament against Slippery Rock in the morning before striking out 10 IUP batters while allowing just one run.
IUP caps its season at 29-25 and closes the season as one of the most prolific offensive teams in program history despite the run-scoring struggles on Wednesday night. IUP dropped the opening game of the morning to Shippensburg, 9-6, setting up the elimination game against the Huskies.
It was part of a strong day for the PSAC East in the opening round of the tournament, winning all five games against schools from the PSAC West. Only one matchup saw two PSAC East schools in action against each other as top-seeded East Stroudsburg knocked off Bloomsburg in game five.
The Hawks posted the most wins (29) in a season since the 2014 campaign, playing some remarkable softball in a jam-packed final week of the regular season to clinch a postseason berth.
Bloomsburg jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first inning, giving Sowers all the run support she needed in a complete game victory.
Jaycee Haidze singled home the lone run of the evening for IUP in the first inning, plating
Madison Pikula for her 61st run scored of the season.
Elizabeth Kasper had a solid relief effort in the circle for the Crimson Hawks that spanned 3.2 innings of work. Kasper surrendered three runs (one earned) with two strikeouts, keeping the deficit manageable for IUP into the sixth inning.
Pikula had two more hits, bringing her school record season total to 82 in 2024.
Paige Truax also added a pair of hits in the nightcap for IUP.
Bella Culp posted three knocks for the Huskies offensively with Emma Little adding three RBI.
