INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP baseball program finished out the regular season with a pair of victories, notching a doubleheader sweep of Mercyhurst with 3-1 and 13-8 triumphs on Friday.
IUP closes the regular season with a final mark of 31-13. It's the most wins in a season for the program in over a decade, matching the 2010 squad. IUP finishes the season second in the PSAC West with a 19-9 mark, its top finish since winning the regular season crown in 2010.
Game One: IUP 3, Mercyhurst 1
Home runs from
Ricardo Aponte and
Davin Landers pushed IUP to a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning. Meanwhile,
Jake Black had another outstanding starting effort with six innings of work.
Black posted four strikeouts before
Jimmy Tooley entered with traffic on the basepaths to collect his second save of the season. Aponte and Landers notched two hits each to lead IUP.
Harrison Pontoli became the seventh player in program history to reach 200 career hits with a leadoff double in the third. Aponte homered in the next trip to the plate for IUP, breaking a scoreless tie.
Mercyhurst had runners on the corners in the seventh and later loaded the bases with a walk. Tooley finished out the game with a pair of strikeouts to limit the Mercyhurst threat. The Lakers only pushed across one run on a sacrifice fly for the second out of the frame.
Game Two: IUP 13, Mercyhurst 8
A 10-run third inning gave IUP all the offense it needed, while the Crimson Hawk bullpen clamped down in timely situations in a doubleheader sweep.
Brady Yard broke the game open with a bases-clearing triple for a 10-2 advantage, continuing the momentum following a walk and two hit by pitches with the bases loaded earlier in the frame. Yard scored three hits in game two, along with Aponte.
Robert Carfagno later blasted his first collegiate home run in the fifth, clearing the wall in left field for a 13-6 margin. Carfagno posted four RBI on two hits, while IUP piecemealed together 3.1 innings from the bullpen.
The game was halted for about 30 minutes in the sixth inning after a passing rain cell.
