PREVIEW: IUP looks to bounce back at home against Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday

INDIANA, Pa. -- The IUP women's basketball program continues their home streak with a matchup against the Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats on Wednesday, January 15. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside the KCAC.

TIPOFF NOTES
>> Last week No.19 IUP fell to No.9/10 Gannon 61-54, after the Golden Knights made a layup and converted six free throws late in the fourth quarter.
>> The loss against Gannon handed IUP their second loss this season and first within the conference.
>> Nyshae' Weaver was named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on January 7 for the second time this season and received PSAC honors for the third overall time this season.
>> Ellie Wilkerson was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7 after her impressive efforts the past two games.
>> The Hawks are receiving votes in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll and were ranked 19th in the D2CSC Media Poll. IUP sits third in the Atlantic Region behind PSAC opponents Seton Hill and Gannon.
>> The Hawks are currently averaging 70.3 PPG, 40.4 RPG, 13.8 APG, 8.5 SPG, and 2.4 BPG. IUP is shooting .456 from the field, .301 beyond the arc, and .707 from the free throw line.
>> IUP is ranked third in the conference for scoring defense, limiting their opponents to an average of 56.6 PPG.
>> The Hawks rank fifth in the PSAC for scoring offense, averaging 70.3 PPG and are second in the conference in field goal percentage (.456).
>> Centrulla has started all 37 career games at IUP. This season she is averaging 23.4 MPG, 6.4 PPG, 4.3 RPG, and has grabbed eight steals and 12 blocks.
>> The lead scorers for the Hawks are Nyshae' Weaver and Shamia Strayhorn. Weaver is averaging 15.5 PPG and Strayhorn is averaging 13.7 PPG. 
>> Lily Jordan made her second start this season against Gannon and led the Hawks with 17 points, two blocks, and four assists.

PITT-JOHNSTOWN AT A GLANCE 
>> Pitt-Johnstown is 2-14 and 0-9 in the conference. 
>> The Mountain Cats had five returners after eight seniors graduated, and brought in six new players, including two transfers.
>> The program hired D'wan Shackleford-Vickroy as their fifth head coach in August of 2024. She graduated from Ohio State in 2004 where she was a Big-10 All-Star Team selection and a two-time Best Defensive Player Award winner.
>> Last season the team finished 15-13 overall and 10-12 in the PSAC.
>> Their two wins this season have come against non-conference opponents Davis and Elkins (WV) and West Virginia State.
>> Their three most recent losses have come against PSAC West opponents, averaging a -27.0 point margin.
>> Edinboro outscored Pitt-Johnstown on January 8, 87-36.
>> UPJ is averaging 58.4 PPG, 34.4 RPG, 13.0 APG, 8.9 SPG, and 2.1 BPG.
>> They are ranked last in the PSAC in scoring offense (58.4) and scoring defense (72.4).
>> They are shooting .380 from the field, .306 beyond the arc, and .752 from the free throw line.
>> Two starters that have stayed consistent all season have been Riley Childress and Lexi Margolis. Both have posted above 20 steals, Childress leads with 26 and Margolis follows with 22.
>> The lead scorer for UPJ is Belle Bosch, she is averaging 15.3 PPG and is shooting .464 from the field. Bosch has scored 20+ points three times this season and 15+ points nine times. She also leads the team in RPG (6.7) and blocks (8).

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the teams 62nd overall time meeting. Pitt-Johnstown leads the series with 35 wins and IUP has 26 wins. Over the past two seasons, IUP has won three of the five meetings and the two most recent. In the most recent matchup, Weaver led the Hawks with 28 points, shot 12-for-14, grabbed 13 rebounds, and had a block and three steals. Centrulla saw 33 minutes of action and scored five points, grabbed eight rebounds, and had a steal. Macie Jarrett saw nine minutes of action and grabbed two rebounds. 

TRIPLE HONORS FOR WEAVER
Weaver was named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on November 25 and most recently on January 7 and was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week on December 9. 

Weaver ranks 13th in conference scoring, averaging 15.5 PPG. She is third in rebounding, averaging 10.8 per game. Weaver is shooting .667 from the field, which ranks her second in the conference. Weaver has scored double digits in ten games this season, recording a season high of 26 points against Shepherd. She also just notched her sixth double-double of the season against Daemen. Weaver has led the team in points seven times and rebounds 10 ten times throughout this season

A LOOK INTO STRAYHORN
Senior guard Shamia Strayhorn leads the team in MPG, averaging 32.1 minutes, placing her at 16th in the PSAC. Strayhorn is shooting .407 from the field and has contributed 49 rebounds, 36 assists, 25 steals, and three blocks to the team. Strayhorn has led the team in assists six times this season, followed by steals five times. Her free throw percentage ranks 17th in the PSAC (.741) from 58 attempts.

WILKERSON MAKING HER WAY
Ellie Wilkerson has started all 13 of the games she has appeared in. She just earned PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7 after her impressive performances at Daemen and Edinboro. Wilkerson posted her best performance of the season against Daemen, scoring 20 points on .643 shooting from the field with nine made field goals. For the week, she averaged 17.5 points per game, 33 minutes, and shot better than .500 from the field. 

Overall, she is averaging 26.2 MPG, 10.6 PPG, 3.9 RPG, and is shooting .453 from the field. She has totaled 18 steals so far this season, and has recorded at least one steal in every game leading up to Gannon. She has recorded two steals in six games this season, most recently against Edinboro. She has scored 15+ points three times this season. 

FRESH OFF THE BENCH
IUP has utilized players off the bench throughout this season, including Lily Jordan, Madison Zavasky, Marin Miller, and Macie Jarrett. Leading the bench in scoring is freshman Jordan who is shooting .463 from the field and is averaging 7.1 PPG. Averaging 24.9 minutes per game, she has notched 11 steals, five blocks, and 4.8 RPG. Junior Millersville transfer Miller, is shooting .431 from the field and .423 beyond the arc. She is averaging 19.3 minutes per game, 5.5 PPG, and has grabbed eight steals.

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE
Since the opening of the KCAC in the 2011-12 season, IUP has had an outstanding home court advantage to go along with a nationally prominent basketball program. 
IUP boasts a 163-29 (.852) record in home games since the venue opened, not losing more than four home games in a single season during that span. At the KCAC, the IUP women have won:
- 7 of 8 games in 2024-2025 (7-1)
-13 of 15 games in 2023-24 (13-2)
-13 of 17 games in 2022-23 & 2021-22 (13-4)
