PETERSBURG, Va. — IUP raced out to a dominant start and never let up in a 70–32 win over Virginia State on Sunday afternoon.
The Crimson Hawks opened the game with a 25–4 first quarter, overwhelming the Trojans early and carrying a 43–11 lead into halftime. IUP's defense held Virginia State to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters.
Nyshae' Weaver led all scorers with 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting while adding nine rebounds and two assists. Teresa Maggio added 10 points, and Belle Bosch finished with eight points and nine rebounds in 20 minutes.
IUP shot 48 percent from the field and made 18 of 25 free throws. The Crimson Hawks also outrebounded Virginia State 50–41 and scored 14 points off turnovers.
Virginia State struggled offensively throughout, shooting just 21 percent from the floor and going 0-for-14 from three-point range. Sydney Roberts, Maya Ellis and Jada Coleman each scored six points to lead the Trojans.
IUP improved to 2–0 with the win, while Virginia State fell to 1–1.
