INDIANA, Pa. — Indiana (Pa.) built a 13-7 first-quarter lead and controlled the ball for more than 31 minutes, but Assumption scored 16 unanswered points and held the Crimson Hawks scoreless after halftime in a 23–20 loss Saturday afternoon at George P. Miller Stadium.
IUP (7–4) opened strong, answering an early Assumption touchdown with back-to-back scoring drives. Tavion Banks capped an eight-play, 67-yard possession with a 2-yard run to tie it 7–7. Parker Gregg punched in a 1-yard score minutes later after Tai'Don Strickland's interception set up a short field, giving the Crimson Hawks a 13–7 lead.
Freshman running back Leon Parson pushed the margin to 20–7 with 2:48 left in the half, finishing an 18-play, 88-yard drive that drained nearly 10 minutes off the clock. Assumption trimmed the deficit to 20–10 at the break with a 29-yard field goal on the final play of the half.
The Greyhounds (10–2) controlled the third quarter, tying the game with two short rushing touchdowns from quarterback Dom Santiago. His 2-yard run at 11:12 and a 1-yard keeper late in the period capped drives of 67 and 98 yards, respectively, giving Assumption its first lead since the opening minutes.
IUP had three fourth-quarter possessions but was forced to punt twice and turned the ball over on downs near midfield on its final opportunity.
Matthew Rueve threw for 231 yards on 22-of-36 passing, with Devin Whitlock catching 13 passes for 152 yards. The Crimson Hawks' defense was led by Nathan Rosario-Santos with 10 tackles, while Strickland added nine stops and an interception.
Assumption finished with 418 total yards, including 271 through the air from Santiago, who also ran for two scores. The Greyhounds converted 9 of 16 third downs and scored on four of five red-zone trips.
