PREVIEW: IUP women's basketball head out to Johnstown for a midweek matchup

INDIANA, Pa. - The IUP women's basketball program hopes to take winning momentum into their matchup against Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday, February 12 at 5:30 p.m.

TIPOFF NOTES

>> IUP had a hard earned victory against Gannon on Saturday, 73-66.

>> Shamia Strayhorn led the charge for the Crimson Hawks, scoring 23 points, followed by Nyshae' Weaver with 16, and Ellie Wilkerson with 12. 

>> Strayhorn grabbed five rebounds for the team, and Weaver grabbed 12, marking her ninth double-double of the season. 

>> Weaver was named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on January 7 for the second time this season and received PSAC honors for the third overall time this season.

>> Wilkerson was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7.

>> The Hawks are not receiving in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll and in the D2CSC Media Poll. IUP sits fifth in the Atlantic Region behind PSAC opponents Seton Hill, Edinboro and Gannon.

>> The Hawks are currently averaging 69.8 PPG, 39.8 RPG, 13.5 APG, 8.7 SPG, and 2.6 BPG. IUP is shooting .450 from the field, .302 beyond the arc, and .716 from the free throw line.

>> IUP is ranked second in the conference for scoring defense, limiting their opponents to an average of 57.6 PPG.

>> The Hawks rank fifth in the PSAC for scoring offense, averaging 69.8 PPG, and are second in the conference in field goal percentage (.450).

>> Centrulla has started all 49 career games at IUP. This season she is averaging 25.0 MPG, 7.3 PPG, 5.2 RPG, and has grabbed 14 steals and 20 blocks. She scored a career-high at IUP of 21 points against Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday, January 15th.

>> Johnstown's most recent contest resulted in a loss against Edinboro, 55-79

>> Sophomore Belle Bosch led the Mountain Cats with 14 points, followed by Mllaya Ainsworth with 11, and Lexi Margolis with nine. Bosch was also the top rebounder for Johnstown, grabbing 12, followed by both Ainsworth and Margolis with six. 

PITT JOHNSTOWN AT A GLANCE

UPJ has an overall record of 2-20, and a conference record of 0-15. Their two nonconference wins were against Davis and Elkins (82-68), and West Virginia State (81-80). UPJ is currently shooting .369 from the field, .269 from the arc, and .736 from the line. The Mountain Cats are averaging 57.4 PPG, 35.2 RPG, 13.2 APG, 9.0 SPG, and 2.0 BPG. 

UPJ's top point scorer is sophomore G/F, Belle Bosch. Bosch has started 19 out of 21 games this season. Bosch is posting 14.7 PPG, 29.7 MPG, 7.0 RPG, 1.4 APG, and 3.4 TOG. 

Bosch also leads the Mountain Cats in rebounding. Following Bosch is Ainsworth with 4.7 RPG and 6.8 PPG, and Riley Childress with 4.1 RPG and 7.5 PPG. 

SERIES HISTORY

In their most recent matchup on January 15, IUP came out with the win, 84-62. Strayhorn led the Crimson Hawks, scoring 24 points and six rebounds, followed by Centrulla with 21 points and eight rebounds, and Scott with 14 points and five rebounds. 

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE

Since the opening of the KCAC in the 2011-12 season, IUP has had an outstanding home court advantage to go along with a nationally prominent basketball program. 

IUP boasts a 165-30 (.846) record in home games since the venue opened, not losing more than four home games in a single season during that span. At the KCAC, the IUP women have won: 

- 9 of 11 games in 2024-2025 (9-2) 

-13 of 15 games in 2023-24 (13-2) 

-13 of 17 games in 2022-23 & 2021-22 (13-4)

PSAC PLAYOFFS

As of their game against Gannon on Saturday, IUP is placed at fourth in the PSAC, guaranteeing their participation in the playoffs. IUP is sitting behind conference leader, Seton Hill (13-2, 20-3), Edinboro (14-2, 19-4), and Gannon (12-4, 20-5). Since 1984, IUP has appeared in the PSAC tournament 26 times, has appeared in the PSAC West Championship eight times, and has made it to the PSAC Championship six times. 

WILKERSON MAKING HER WAY

Ellie Wilkerson has started all 19 of the games she has appeared in. She earned PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7 after her impressive performances at Daemen and Edinboro. Wilkerson posted her best performance of the season against Daemen, scoring 20 points on .643 shooting from the field with nine made field goals. For the week, she averaged 17.5 points per game, 33 minutes, and shot better than .500 from the field. 

Overall, she is averaging 27.4 MPG, 10.3 PPG, 4.1 RPG, and is shooting .440 from the field. She has totaled 24 steals so far this season and has recorded at least one steal in every game leading up to Gannon. She has recorded at least two steals in seven games this season, most recently snagging four against Seton Hill. She has scored 15+ points four times this season. 

A LOOK INTO STRAYHORN

Senior guard Shamia Strayhorn leads the team in MPG, averaging 32.8 minutes, placing her at 15th in the PSAC. Strayhorn is shooting .424 from the field and has contributed 77 rebounds, 42 assists, 35 steals, and four blocks to the team. Strayhorn has led the team in assists six times this season, followed by steals seven times. Her free throw percentage ranks 16th in the PSAC (.755) from 98 attempts.

MORE FROM MILLER

Millersville transfer Marin Miller has started the new year strong. Since their first game against Daemen on the 3rd, Miller has begun increasing her PPG average, going from 4.8 at the end of December, to 5.8 this past week. Miller is also averaging 3.0 RPG and 1.7 APG. Miller had a career high of 24 points against Pitt-Johnstown on January 15. 

FRESH OFF THE BENCH

IUP has utilized players off the bench through the season, including Lily Jordan, Madison Zavasky, and Macie Jarrett. Freshman Jordan is leading the bench in points, shooting .504 from the field and averaging 7.5 PPG. Averaging 24.7 MPG, Jordan has notched 86 rebounds, 31 assists, 16 steals, and six blocks. Macie Jarrett has witnessed more minutes this new year, averaging 8.0 MPG, all while averaging .455 from the field and .600 from the arc, Jarrett has posted 12 rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
