PREVIEW: IUP women's basketball is back at the KCAC for a special senior day

INDIANA, Pa. - The IUP women's basketball program is looking to continue their win streak on a senior day matchup against nationally ranked 21(D2CSC) Edinboro on Saturday, February 15 at 1:00 p.m. A special senior day recognition will take place prior to tip off.

>> IUP earned a tough overtime win against UPJ on Wednesday, 79-67
>> Shamia Strayhorn led the charge for the Crimson Hawks, scoring 26 points, followed by Nyshae' Weaver with 15, and Janeira Scott with 13.
>> Weaver led the team in rebounds with seven, followed by Grace Centrulla with six.
>> Weaver was named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on January 7 for the second time this season and received PSAC honors for the third overall time this season.
>> Wilkerson was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7.
>> The Hawks are not receiving in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll and in the D2CSC Media Poll. IUP sits fifth in the Atlantic Region behind PSAC opponents Seton Hill, Edinboro and Gannon.
>> The Hawks are currently averaging 70.2 PPG, 39.8 RPG, 13.4 APG, 8.8 SPG, and 2.5 BPG. IUP is shooting .454 from the field, .296 beyond the arc, and .714 from the free throw line.
>> IUP is ranked third in the conference for scoring defense, limiting their opponents to an average of 58.0 PPG.
>> The Hawks rank fifth in the PSAC for scoring offense, averaging 70.2 PPG, and are first in the conference in field goal percentage (.454).
>> Centrulla has started all 50 career games at IUP. This season she is averaging 25.6 MPG, 7.3 PPG, 5.2 RPG, and has grabbed 16 steals and 21 blocks. She scored a career-high at IUP of 21 points against Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday, January 15th.
>> Edinboro's most recent win was against UPJ last Saturday, 79-55.
>> Gabby McDuffie led the Fighting Scots to victory with 22 points and eight rebounds, followed by Morgan Gentile with 17, and Ashten Boggs with 11.
>> McDuffie also led in rebounds, followed by Boggs with seven, and Sims with six.
 

EDINBORO AT A GLANCE

Edinboro has an overall record of 19-4, and a conference record of 14-2. Edinboro's two conference losses were against IUP, 83-70, and Seton Hill, 73-67.  The Fighting Scots are averaging 73.8 PPG, and holding their opponents to 59.1 PPG, all while shooting .451 from the field, .316 from the arc, and .793 from the line. Edinboro is averaging 39.5 RPG, 14.9 APG, 15.8 TPG, 9.2 SPG, and 4.3 BPG. 

Edinboro's top point scorer is graduate student, Morgan Gentile. During her three seasons at Edinboro, Gentile has totaled 961 points. Gentile is averaging 31.9 MPG, 14.8 PPG, 5.0 RPG, and 4.7 SPG, all while shooting .407 from the field, .305 from the arc, and .782 from the line. 

Edinboro's top rebounder is graduate student, Gaby McDuffie. McDuffie is averaging 6.7 RPG, 9.5 PPG, and 1.4 APG. 
 

LAST MATCHUP

In their most recent matchup on January 6th, IUP defeated the Fighting Scots, 83-70. Weaver led the Crimson Hawks with 17 points and 14 rebounds, followed by Wilkerson with 15 points, and Strayhorn with 14 points. The team racked up a total of 33 rebounds, 15 assists, and eight steals. IUP shot .558 from the field, .500 from the arc, and .900 from the line. 

For Edinboro, Sims led the team with 17 points, followed by Ava Haddad with 14, and Gentile with 11. Edinboro scored 19 points off of turnovers, 21 bench points, and 11 second chance points. The Fighting Scots shot .444 from the field, .167 from the arc, and .786 from the line. 

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE

Since the opening of the KCAC in the 2011-12 season, IUP has had an outstanding home court advantage to go along with a nationally prominent basketball program. 

IUP boasts a 165-30 (.846) record in home games since the venue opened, not losing more than four home games in a single season during that span. At the KCAC, the IUP women have won: 

- 9 of 11 games in 2024-2025 (9-2) 

-13 of 15 games in 2023-24 (13-2) 

-13 of 17 games in 2022-23 & 2021-22 (13-4)

PSAC PLAYOFFS

As of their game against UPJ on Wednesday, IUP is placed at third in the PSAC, guaranteeing their participation in the playoffs. IUP is sitting behind conference leader, Seton Hill (14-2, 20-3) and Edinboro (14-2, 19-4). Since 1984, IUP has appeared in the PSAC tournament 26 times, has appeared in the PSAC West Championship eight times, and has made it to the PSAC Championship six times. 
 

WILKERSON MAKING HER WAY

Ellie Wilkerson has started all 19 of the games she has appeared in. She earned PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7 after her impressive performances at Daemen and Edinboro. Wilkerson posted her best performance of the season against Daemen, scoring 20 points on .643 shooting from the field with nine made field goals. For the week, she averaged 17.5 points per game, 33 minutes, and shot better than .500 from the field. 

Overall, she is averaging 28.0 MPG, 10.3 PPG, 4.1 RPG, and is shooting .443 from the field. She has totaled 26 steals so far this season and has recorded at least one steal in every game leading up to Gannon. She has recorded at least two steals in eight games this season, most recently snagging four against Seton Hill. She has scored 15+ points four times this season. 

A LOOK INTO STRAYHORN

Senior guard Shamia Strayhorn leads the team in MPG, averaging 33.4 minutes, placing her at 15th in the PSAC. Strayhorn is shooting .440 from the field and has contributed 82 rebounds, 44 assists, 37 steals, and four blocks to the team. Strayhorn has led the team in assists six times this season, followed by steals seven times. Her free throw percentage ranks 16th in the PSAC (.729) from 107 attempts.

SENIOR CELEBRATION

This Saturday, IUP will be honoring seniors Janeira Scott, Macie Jarrett, Strayhorn, and Centrulla. Scott has made an appearance in 66 games during her time at IUP, starting every game this season. Scott has totaled 35 steals this season, scored 10 or more points in six games this season, and is averaging 7.2 PPG. A mid-year transfer last season from Edinboro, Jarrett has been featured in 33 games during her time at IUP. Strayhorn, a transfer from Wheeling, has started in every game this season. Strayhorn reached 1,000 career points this season in a win against West Chester on December 7th. Strayhorn is ranked sixth in the PSAC in scoring, with 15.7 PPG, and tenth in the PSAC in FG%, shooting .440 from the field. Centrulla is a two-year member of the program, starting in all 50 games she has appeared in. Centrulla is ranked fourth in the PSAC in total blocks in the 2023-24 season, and she leads the team this year with 21 blocks. 
 

FRESH OFF THE BENCH

IUP has utilized players off the bench, including Lily Jordan and Macie Jarrett. Freshman Jordan is leading the bench in points, shooting .504 from the field and averaging 7.5 PPG. Averaging 24.7 MPG, Jordan has notched 86 rebounds, 31 assists, 16 steals, and six blocks. Macie Jarrett has witnessed more minutes this new year, averaging 8.0 MPG, all while averaging .455 from the field and .600 from the arc, Jarrett has posted 12 rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
