PREVIEW: IUP women's basketball looks to climb the PSAC standings in matchup against Slippery Rock

INDIANA, Pa. - The IUP women's basketball program is looking to recover from a tough overtime loss in a PSAC matchup against Slippery Rock on Saturday, February 22nd at 1:00 p.m.

>> IUP had a heartbreaking loss against conference leader Seton Hill on Wednesday, 86-82.
>> Nyshae' Weaver led the charge for IUP, scoring 24 points and grabbing 20 rebounds. Shamia Strayhorn followed with 18 points and six rebounds, and Ellie Wilkerson with 18 points and seven rebounds. 
>> Weaver was named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on January 7 for the second time this season and received PSAC honors for the third overall time this season.
>> Wilkerson was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7.
>> The Hawks are not receiving in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll and in the D2CSC Media Poll. IUP sits fourth in the Atlantic Region behind PSAC opponents Seton Hill, Edinboro, and Gannon.
>> The Hawks are currently averaging 71.0 PPG, 40.3 RPG, 13.3 APG, 9.1 SPG, and 2.5 BPG. IUP is shooting .451 from the field, .301 beyond the arc, and .696 from the free throw line.
>> IUP is ranked sixth in the conference for scoring defense, limiting their opponents to an average of 59.9 PPG.
>> The Hawks rank fifth in the PSAC for scoring offense, averaging 71.0 PPG, and are first in the conference in field goal percentage (.451).
>> Scott has been posting some large numbers recently, increasing her PPG to 7.2, and her APG to 2.6. This season, Scott is averaging 26.6 MPG, 7.2 PPG, 2.6 APG, and she is shooting .356 from the field and .741 from the line.
>> Slippery Rock's most recent matchup resulted in a loss against Clarion, 58-76.
>> Mairan Haggerty led with 12 points, followed by Alyssa Gillin with nine. 
>> Endya Robinson led in rebounds with seven, followed by Gillin with six. 
 

SLIPPERY ROCK AT A GLANCE

Slippery Rock has an overall record of 7-17 and a conference record of 4-14. Slippery Rock's four conference wins are against West Chester (69-56), Kutztown (64-57), Mansfield (70-51), and UPJ (71-58). Slippery Rock is averaging 61.8 PPG, 37.2 RPG, 12.9 APG, 18.0 TOG, 6.9 SPG, and 3.5 BPG. Slippery Rock is shooting .388 from the field, .305 from the arc, and .712 from the line. 

Slippery Rock's top point scorer is sophomore guard, Regan Atkins. Atkins is averaging 11.4 PPG, 5.9 RPG, and 2.0 APG, all while shooting .416 from the field, .339 from the arc, and .685 from the line. 

Slippery Rock's top rebounder is junior forward, Kayley Joseph-Bernard. Joseph-Bernard is averaging 7.1 RPG and 3.3 APG. Joseph-Bernard is shooting .456 from the field and .760 from the line. 

LAST MATCHUP

In the their most recent contest on January 22nd, IUP defeated Slippery Rock, 64-48. Strayhorn led in scoring with 16 points, followed by Wilkerson with 12 and Weaver with 10. The Crimson Hawks shot .385 from the field, .308 from the arc, and .714 from the line. Robinson led Slippery Rock in points with 11, followed by Brooklyn Jones with 7. Slippery Rock scored 17 bench points and seven second chance points.     

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE

Since the opening of the KCAC in the 2011-12 season, IUP has had an outstanding home court advantage to go along with a nationally prominent basketball program. 

IUP boasts a 165-30 (.846) record in home games since the venue opened, not losing more than four home games in a single season during that span. At the KCAC, the IUP women have won: 

- 10 of 12 games in 2024-2025 (10-2) 

-13 of 15 games in 2023-24 (13-2) 

-13 of 17 games in 2022-23 & 2021-22 (13-4)

PSAC PLAYOFFS

As of their game against Seton Hill on Wednesday, IUP is placed at fourth in the PSAC, guaranteeing their participation in the playoffs. IUP is sitting behind conference leader, Seton Hill (14-2, 20-3), Edinboro (14-3, 19-5), and Gannon (22-5, 14-4). Since 1984, IUP has appeared in the PSAC tournament 26 times, has appeared in the PSAC West Championship eight times, and has made it to the PSAC Championship six times. 

WILKERSON MAKING HER WAY

Ellie Wilkerson has started 21 of the games she has appeared in. She earned PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7 after her impressive performances at Daemen and Edinboro. Wilkerson posted her best performance of the season against Daemen, scoring 20 points on .643 shooting from the field with nine made field goals. For the week, she averaged 17.5 points per game, 33 minutes, and shot better than .500 from the field. 

Overall, she is averaging 28.5 MPG, 10.8 PPG, 4.2 RPG, and is shooting .450 from the field. She has totaled 29 steals so far this season and has recorded at least one steal in every game leading up to Gannon. She has recorded at least two steals in nine games this season, most recently snagging four against Seton Hill. She has scored 15+ points five times this season. 

A LOOK INTO STRAYHORN

Senior guard Shamia Strayhorn leads the team in MPG, averaging 34.0 minutes, placing her at 15th in the PSAC. Strayhorn is shooting .433 from the field and has contributed 91 rebounds, 48 assists, 43 steals, and four blocks to the team. Strayhorn has led the team in assists six times this season, followed by steals seven times. Her free throw percentage ranks 16th in the PSAC (.706) from 119 attempts.

WONDERFUL WEAVER

Junior forward Nyshae' Weaver has been making a name for herself this season. Weaver was named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on January 7 for the second time this season and received PSAC honors for the third overall time this season. Weaver is leading the team with 11.3 RPG, placing her at third in the conference. On top of her rebounding, Weaver is averaging 15.4 PPG, which is the second highest on the team, and 12th in the conference. On top of her impressive PPG and RPG numbers, Weaver has tallied 11 double-doubles this season alone. 

FRESH OFF THE BENCH

IUP has utilized players off the bench, including Lily Jordan and Macie Jarrett. Freshman Jordan is leading the bench in points, shooting .471 from the field and averaging 7.1 PPG. Averaging 24.0 MPG, Jordan has notched 101 rebounds, 34 assists, 19 steals, and six blocks. Macie Jarrett has witnessed more minutes this new year, averaging 7.8 MPG, all while averaging .385 from the field and .600 from the arc, Jarrett has posted 15 rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
