IUP split day two at USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. — The IUP baseball team split Saturday's game, dropping the first first 20-4, but won the second 5-2. 

Game 1:
Branden Kanick contributed a double and two RBIs, while David Kessler went 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.

IUP started the game with Ricardo Aponte reaching on a single before being caught stealing. David Kessler followed with a single, and Mike Huber drew a walk, but both were stranded on base.

In the first four innings, USC Aiken scored a total of seven runs. 

In the top of the fifth, Kessler delivered an RBI triple to bring in Au'sean Owens for IUP's first run. However, USC Aiken responded in the bottom half of the inning with 10 runs on six hits.

In the top of the seventh, IUP capitalized with three players walked. Cameron Copple reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Keegan Carr to score. Kanick doubled to left center that drove both Luke Goodwin and Cayden Bender in. Despite the late effort, IUP trailed 17-4 heading into the bottom of the inning.

USC Aiken tacked on two more runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to extend their lead. Copple walked in the ninth but was left on base after Kanick grounded out, the game ended 20-4.

Game 2:

Aponte went 4-for-4 with a double, a run, and a stolen base. Johnson contributed a hit, two RBIs, and a run. The team racked up 11 hits, three stolen bases, and a home run from Kessler.

In the second, Mitchell Grosh was walked, Aponte singled, and Carfagno drew a walk to load the bases, but were stranded after a ground out. 

IUP scored two in the fourth inning. Aponte doubled and then scored on Johnson's RBI double to right center. Carfagno followed with a single up the middle, advancing Johnson to third. Bender then reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Johnson to cross home plate.

Kessler extended the lead in the fifth with a solo home run. Huber reached on an error and later scored when Johnson reached on a fielder's choice, making it 4-0. In the bottom of the fifth, USC Aiken hit a triple and then scored from an error, IUP still up 4-1. In the sixth, Carfagno singled up the middle and then stole second, but was left on base.

USC Aiken added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Aponte singled down left field and stole second. Johnston was walked but was left on base in the seventh.

In the eighth, Owens singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. essler walked, and Teague Hoover followed with an RBI single to bring Owens home, giving IUP a 5-2 advantage.
