Hawk's control lead, picking up 59-49 win over Slippery Rock

INDIANA, Pa. – Despite lower-than-average shooting, IUP held the lead the entire game against Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon.

This win over Slippery Rock improved  IUP to 19-5 overall and 14-4 in the conference and will dropped Slippery Rock to 7-18 overall and 4-15 in the PSAC.

Nyshae' Weaver led the Crimson Hawks with 12 points and 13 rebounds, marking her 12th double-double of the season. Madison Zavasky followed with 10 points and eight rebounds, and Shamia Strayhorn trailed with nine points.

Slippery Rock was first to score in the game. Scoring went back and forth until Strayhorn hit a three pointer with five minutes left in the quarter, increasing the score to 7-6 IUP. Slippery Rock did not score any other baskets in the quarter, which allowed Strayhorn to go on a seven-point run. With an additional layup from Marin Miller, IUP scored the last basket of the quarter at minute 2:38, which extended IUP's lead to 13-6.

Once again, Slippery Rock started the scoring two minutes into the quarter with two free throws. Macie Jarrett responded with a three pointer, which minimized the damage dealt from Slippery Rock. A jump shot from Slippery Rock marked their last made basket of the half, which presented IUP with the opportunity to go on a run at minute 3:54. Baskets from Zavasky, Weaver, and Miller notched a 15-point lead for the Crimson Hawks, 27-12.

The third quarter was solid back and forth scoring from both teams. Slippery Rock tried cutting into IUP's lead with a layup and a three pointer, but Zavasky and Weaver prevented this by putting up five points. Towards the end of the quarter, a detrimental turnover from IUP allowed Slippery Rock to chop the deficit to eight points. A made free throw from Weaver ended the third quarter in favor of the Crimson Hawks, 39-30.

Just like every other quarter, Slippery Rock was the first to score, but IUP did not let that stop them. Back and forth play was reinstated, until Zavasky and Janeira Scott capitalized on two turnovers, which boosted IUP back to a 15-point lead. Despite the effort, Slippery Rock did not catch up, and with a minute and 24 seconds left on the clock, IUP went on a five-point run, to set the final score in stone, 59-45.
