PREVIEW: IUP women's basketball hosts their last regular season home game

INDIANA, Pa. -- The IUP women's basketball program is hosting its last home game of the regular season against Cal U on Wednesday, February 26 at 5:30 p.m.

TIPOFF NOTES

>> IUP is back on track with a slow paced win against Slippery Rock on Saturday, 59-45.
>> Nyshae' Weaver led the charge for IUP, scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Madison Zavasky followed with ten points and eight rebounds, and Shamia Strayhorm posted nine points.
>> Weaver was named PSAC West Co-Athlete of the Week on February 24th for the third time this season and received PSAC honors for the fourth overall time this season.
>> Weaver ranks 20th nationally with 12 double-doubles this season. Weaver also is ranked fourth in Division II with her field goal percentage and eighth in rebounds per game
>> Wilkerson was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7.
>> The Hawks are not receiving in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll and in the D2CSC Media Poll. IUP sits fourth in the Atlantic Region behind PSAC opponents Seton Hill, Edinboro, and Gannon.
>> The Hawks are currently averaging 70.5 PPG, 40.6 RPG, 13.4 APG, 9.0 SPG, and 2.8 BPG. IUP is shooting .447 from the field, .302 beyond the arc, and .694 from the free throw line.
>> IUP is ranked sixth in the conference for scoring defense, limiting their opponents to an average of 59.3 PPG.
>> The Hawks rank fifth in the PSAC for scoring offense, averaging 70.5 PPG, and are first in the conference in field goal percentage (.447).
>> Scott has been posting some large numbers recently, increasing her PPG to 7.2, and her APG to 2.6. This season, Scott is averaging 26.6 MPG, 7.2 PPG, 2.6 APG, and she is shooting .356 from the field and .741 from the line.
>> Talia Gilliard led in scoring with 29 points, followed by Allycia Harris, Iyahnna Williams, and Kimaya Williams each posting ten. 
>> Harris was also the top rebounder for the Vulcans with 13. Alivia Huffman trailed with five. 
 

CAL U AT A GLANCE

Cal U has an overall record of 15-10 and a conference record of 11-7. The Vulcans are shooting .404 from the field, .309 from the arc, and .635 from the line. Cal U is averaging 71.6 PPG, 40.5 RPG, 13.1 APG, 17.3 TOG, and 3.4 BPG. With Cal U's record, the Vulcans are ranked fifth in the west side of the conference, admitting them into playoffs. 

Cal U's top point scorer is Talia Gilliard. This season alone, Gilliard has posted 335 points. Gilliard is averaging 14.0 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 1.2 APG, and 2.3 SPG. Gilliard is shooting .420 from the field, .321 from the arc, and .787 from the line. 

Cal U's top rebounder is Allycia Harris. Harris is averaging 10.0 PPG, 8.3 RPG, and 2.0 APG

LAST MATCHUP

In their most recent contest on January 29th, IUP fell to Cal U, 77-63. Strayhorn led in scoring with 24 points, followed by Weaver with 14 and Lily Jordan with 12. The Crimson Hawks shot .421 from the field, .375 from the arc, and .800 from the line. Williams led Cal U in points with 20, followed by Gilliard with 7. Cal U scored 30 points off of turnovers and seven second-chance points.     

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE

Since the opening of the KCAC in the 2011-12 season, IUP has had an outstanding home-court advantage to go along with a nationally prominent basketball program. 

IUP boasts a 166-30 (.847) record in home games since the venue opened, not losing more than four home games in a single season during that span. At the KCAC, the IUP women have won: 

- 11 of 13 games in 2024-2025 (11-2) 

-13 of 15 games in 2023-24 (13-2) 

-13 of 17 games in 2022-23 & 2021-22 (13-4)

PSAC PLAYOFFS

As of their game against Slippery Rock on Saturday, IUP is placed at fourth in the PSAC, guaranteeing their participation in the playoffs. IUP is sitting behind conference leader, Seton Hill (15-3, 21-4), Edinboro (15-3, 20-5), and Gannon (15-4, 23-5). Since 1984, IUP has appeared in the PSAC tournament 26 times, has appeared in the PSAC West Championship eight times, and has made it to the PSAC Championship six times. 
 

WILKERSON MAKING HER WAY

Ellie Wilkerson has started 21 of the games she has appeared in. She earned PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7 after her impressive performances at Daemen and Edinboro. Wilkerson posted her best performance of the season against Daemen, scoring 20 points on .643 shooting from the field with nine made field goals. For the week, she averaged 17.5 points per game, 33 minutes, and shot better than .500 from the field. 

Overall, she is averaging 28.5 MPG, 10.8 PPG, 4.2 RPG, and is shooting .450 from the field. She has totaled 29 steals so far this season and has recorded at least one steal in every game leading up to Gannon. She has recorded at least two steals in nine games this season, most recently snagging four against Seton Hill. She has scored 15+ points five times this season. 

A LOOK INTO STRAYHORN

Senior guard Shamia Strayhorn leads the team in MPG, averaging 33.8 minutes, placing her at 6th in the PSAC. Strayhorn is shooting .425 from the field and has contributed 94 rebounds, 50 assists, 45 steals, and five blocks to the team. Strayhorn has led the team in assists six times this season, followed by steals seven times. Her free throw percentage ranks 19th in the PSAC (.711) from 121 attempts.

WONDERFUL WEAVER

Junior forward Nyshae' Weaver has been making a name for herself this season. Weaver was named PSAC West Co-Athlete of the Week on January 4th for the third time this season and received PSAC honors for the fifth overall time this season. Weaver is leading the team with 11.0 RPG, placing her at second in the conference. On top of her rebounding, Weaver is averaging 13.4 PPG, which is the second highest on the team, and 9th in the conference. On top of her impressive PPG and RPG numbers, Weaver has tallied 12 double-doubles this season alone. 

FRESH OFF THE BENCH

IUP has utilized players off the bench, including Lily Jordan and Macie Jarrett. Freshman Jordan is leading the bench in points, shooting .469 from the field and averaging 7.0 PPG. Averaging 24.2 MPG, Jordan has notched 103 rebounds, 35 assists, 19 steals, and seven blocks. Macie Jarrett has witnessed more minutes this new year, averaging 7.8 MPG, all while averaging .340 from the field and .667 from the arc, Jarrett has posted 18 rebounds, three assists, and four steals.
