CLARION, Pa. -- IUP closed out the regular season with a 68-55 win over Clarion Friday evening on the road.
With this win IUP improved to 20-6 overall and 15-5 in the conference while Clarion dropped to 14-14 overall and 8-12 in the PSAC.
Shamia Strayhorn led the Hawks with 19 points, made eight field goals, grabbed four rebounds, and three assists. Nyshae' Weaver contributed 16 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Three players recorded two steals each and Ellie Wilkerson posted two blocks.
Wilkerson opened the scoring for the Hawks at 8:14 with a layup, followed by two baskets from Strayhorn that gave IUP a 6-2 lead. Weaver closed out the first quarter with a layup, tying the game at 14.
In the second, Lily Jordan made a layup at 5:12 that extended their lead to seven points. Madison Zavasky made a layup at 3:36 followed by a three-pointer from Macie Jarrett that put the Hawks up nine, 30-21. Clarion added a basket to close out the first half.
The teams traded baskets in the beginning of the third until Weaver's layup at 7:20 gave the Hawks a double-digit lead, 37-27. IUP went on a 9-0 run that ended at 1:07 when Clarion hit a three pointer. However, Marin Miller answered with a three of her own, closing the quarter with IUP ahead 49-36.
Jordan's jumper at 7:11 in the fourth quarter gave IUP its largest lead of the night at 17 points. With under three minutes remaining, Wilkerson capped off the scoring for the Hawks, contributing all six of IUP's final points to secure the victory.
