PREVIEW: IUP women's basketball set for road match against No. 11/7 Gannon

INDIANA, Pa. - The IUP women's basketball program looks to recover from a loss in a matchup against No. 11/7 Gannon on February 8 at 1:00 p.m.

>> IUP had an unexpected loss to the Cal U Vulcans, 63-77.

>> Shamia Strayhorn led the charge for the Crimson Hawks, scoring 24 points, followed by Nyshae' Weaver with 14, and Lily Jordan with 12.

>> Centrula grabbed five rebounds for the team, and Weaver grabbed eight

>> Weaver was named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on January 7 for the second time this season and received PSAC honors for the third overall time this season.

>> Wilkerson was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7.

>> The Hawks are not receiving in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll and in the D2CSC Media Poll. IUP sits fifth in the Atlantic Region behind PSAC opponents Seton Hill, Edinboro and Gannon.

>> The Hawks are currently averaging 69.6 PPG, 40.3 RPG, 13.3 APG, 8.7 SPG, and 2.7 BPG. IUP is shooting .447 from the field, .301 beyond the arc, and .713 from the free throw line.

>> IUP is ranked second in the conference for scoring defense, limiting their opponents to an average of 56.1 PPG.

>> The Hawks rank fifth in the PSAC for scoring offense, averaging 69.6 PPG, and are second in the conference in field goal percentage (.447).

>> Centrulla has started all 42 career games at IUP. This season she is averaging 24.9 MPG, 7.4 PPG, 5.3 RPG, and has grabbed 13 steals and 20 blocks. She scored a career-high at IUP of 21 points against Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday, January 15th.

>> Gannon is ranked 11th in the WBB DII WBCA Poll and seventh in the D2CSC WBB DII Poll.

>> Gannon's most recent game resulted in a loss against the Edinboro Fighting Scots, 66-53.

>> Gannon's Bri Claxon led the Golden Knights in points with 12, followed by Maddy Wheatley with 10. Wheatley and Tori Mayes controlled the board for Gannon, with each grabbing six rebounds. 

GANNON AT A GLANCE

Gannon has an overall record of 20-4, and a conference record of 12-3. The Golden Knights' four losses come from Ohio Dominican (62-73), PSAC East leader Lock Haven (67-69), Edinboro (45-62), and another Edinboro game, 53-66. The Golden Knights are averaging 69.2 PPG, 39.1 RPG, 13.6 APG, 15.5 TO/G, 8.1 SPG, and 3.4 BPG. 

Gannon is shooting .422 from the field, .320 from the arc, and .769 from the line. The Golden Knights are holding their opponents to .350 from the field, .256 from the arc, and .673 from the line. 

Gannon's top point scorer is junior guard, Bri Claxon. Claxon has started all 24 games this season and averages 29.7 MPG. Claxon is averaging 15.8 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 2.0 APG, and 1.2 SPG. Claxon is shooting .459 from the field, .411 from the arc, and .727 from the line. 

Gannon's top rebounder is redshirt junior guard, Maddy Wheatley. Wheatley is averaging 11.0 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.4 APG, and 1.1 BPG. Wheatley is shooting .516 from the field, .422 from the arc, and .864 from the line. 

SERIES HISTORY

This will be IUP's 49th contest against the Gannon Golden Knights. Their first matchup took place in November, 1983, and resulted in a 68-65 loss for IUP. Their most recent matchup was January 8th of this year, and also resulted in a loss for IUP, 54-61. Lily Jordan led the way for the Crimson Hawks, scoring 17 points, followed by Strayhorn with 14 and Wilkerson with 11. Janeira Scott and Marin Miller also helped chip away at the deficit, adding 12 points to their total. Strayhorn and Centrulla controlled the board, grabbing eight rebounds a piece. 

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE

Since the opening of the KCAC in the 2011-12 season, IUP has had an outstanding home court advantage to go along with a nationally prominent basketball program. 

IUP boasts a 165-30 (.846) record in home games since the venue opened, not losing more than four home games in a single season during that span. At the KCAC, the IUP women have won: 

- 9 of 11 games in 2024-2025 (9-2) 

-13 of 15 games in 2023-24 (13-2) 

-13 of 17 games in 2022-23 & 2021-22 (13-4)

WILKERSON MAKING HER WAY

Ellie Wilkerson has started all 18 of the games she has appeared in. She earned PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7 after her impressive performances at Daemen and Edinboro. Wilkerson posted her best performance of the season against Daemen, scoring 20 points on .643 shooting from the field with nine made field goals. For the week, she averaged 17.5 points per game, 33 minutes, and shot better than .500 from the field. 

Overall, she is averaging 27.2 MPG, 10.2 PPG, 3.9 RPG, and is shooting .442 from the field. She has totaled 24 steals so far this season and has recorded at least one steal in every game leading up to Gannon. She has recorded at least two steals in seven games this season, most recently snagging four against Seton Hill. She has scored 15+ points three times this season. 

A LOOK INTO STRAYHORN

Senior guard Shamia Strayhorn leads the team in MPG, averaging 32.5 minutes, placing her at 18th in the PSAC. Strayhorn is shooting .414 from the field and has contributed 72 rebounds, 41 assists, 34 steals, and four blocks to the team. Strayhorn has led the team in assists six times this season, followed by steals seven times. Her free throw percentage ranks 17th in the PSAC (.747) from 91 attempts.

MORE FROM MILLER

Millersville transfer Marin Miller has started the new year strong. Since their first game against Daemen on the 3rd, Miller has begun increasing her PPG average, going from 4.8 at the end of December, to 6.1 this past week. Miller is also averaging 3.0 RPG and 1.7 APG. Miller had a career high of 24 points against Pitt-Johnstown on January 15. 

FRESH OFF THE BENCH

IUP has utilized players off the bench through the season, including Lily Jordan, Madison Zavasky, and Macie Jarrett. Freshman Jordan is leading the bench in points, shooting .504 from the field and averaging 7.5 PPG. Averaging 25.0 MPG, Jordan has notched 86 rebounds, 30 assists, 16 steals, and six blocks. Macie Jarrett has witnessed more minutes this new year, averaging 8.3 MPG, all while averaging .455 from the field and .600 from the arc, Jarrett has posted 12 rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
