IUP TIPOFF NOTES
- IUP is making its 17th DII Tournament appearance and the second under third-year head coach Craig Carey.
- The winner of Friday's matchup between IUP/Fairmont State takes on the winner of No. 8 Virginia State / No. 1 Edinboro on Saturday, March 15 in the Atlantic Region Semifinals.
- IUP is returning to action for the first time since a 66-64 setback against Edinboro on Wednesday, March 5 in the PSAC Quarterfinals.
- Nyshae' Weaver just surpassed 1,000 career points at Edinboro, she joins Strayhorn and Centrulla.
- IUP and Fairmont State will meet for the ninth time overall, with a 5-3 record. The teams last met early last season at Fairmont State but the Hawks lost 78-64.
- IUP earned two All-PSAC West First Team selections including junior forward Nyshae' Weaver and senior guard Shamia Strayhorn. Weaver earned four PSAC weekly awards and Ellie Wilkerson earned one.
- IUP is 21-7 overall which included a 9-0 run to start the season.
- IUP is 30th nationally in rebounding margin (+6.4) and first in the PSAC for defensive rebounds per game.
- IUP is averaging 69.4 PPG, 40.3 RPG, 13.3 APG, 9.0 SPG, and 3.0 BPG.
- They are shooting .444 from the field, .296 beyond the arc, and .694 from the free throw line.
- The Hawks are holding their opponents to 59.6 PPG and .374 beyond the arc.
FAIRMONT STATE AT A GLANCE
- Fairmont State made an appearance in the 2024 NCAA DII Atlantic Regional with a win against No. 7 West Chester in the Quarterfinals but fell to No. 3 Fayetteville State in the semifinals, 70-62.
- On Sunday, Fairmont State defeated Glenville State 79-69 to be crowned the Mountain East Conference Champions in back-to-back season.
- They finished the regular season 17-3 in the conference and are 27-4 overall, currently holding a nine-game win streak.
- Fairmont State is receiving votes in the D2CSC Women's Basketball National Poll.
- The Fighting Falcons earned two major MEC postseason awards. Junior guard Leslie Huffman was named the MEC Player of the Year and head coach Stephanie Anderson was named the MEC Coach of the Year.
- Graduate guard Alyssa DeAngelo was a first team selection and graduate forward Jalen Gibbs earned second team honors.
- Following the conclusion of the MEC Championship, three players were named to the All-Tournament team including Huffman, Madeline Huffman, and DeAngelo. L. Huffman was named the MEC Tournament MVP and senior Aaliyah Brunny was selected for Commissioner's Heart and Hustle Award.
- The team is averaging 79.0 PPG, 37.0 RPG, 12.7 APG, 11.6 SPG, and 3.8 BPG.
- The Fighting Falcons are shooting .439 from the field, .336 beyond the arc, and .723 from the free throw line.
- Fairmont State holds their opponents to 61.6 PPG and .379 from the field.
- Gibbs leads the MEC with a .571 field goal percentage, is ranked 11th averaging 12.9 PPG, and ninth averaging 7.1 RPG.
- Both Huffman and DeAngelo rank in the MEC top five in scoring, ranking third (17.6) and fifth (15.0) respectively.
- Four of five starters have been the same throughout the 31 games this season, besides one who missed just one game, sitting with 30 starts.
- In the beginning of the 2024-25 season, Fairmont State matched up with three PSAC opponents holding a 2-1 result.
HEAD COACH CRAIG CAREY
- Coach Carey entered his third overall season, prior to serving in an interim capacity during his first season in 2022-23.
- Carey's current overall record is 60-25 through three seasons marking his second NCAA Atlantic Regional appearance. The past three seasons IUP has finished fourth in the PSAC West.
- Carey is a 2012 graduate of WVU, playing one season with the Mountaineer men's program before assisting his father with the women's squad at West Virginia.
ALL AROUND WEAVER
- Junior forward Nyshae' Weaver continues to build her resume from her sophomore season into her junior season. She is a two-time All-PSAC selection, including First Team honors this season.
- Weaver was awarded PSAC weekly honors four times throughout this season which included defensive honors three times.
- She was just selected as a D2CCA All-Atlantic Region Second Team honoree on Thursday.
- Weaver ranks second nationally in field goal percentage (.654) putting her first in the conference. She ranks 10th in the conference for points per game (15.0). She is ninth nationally grabbing 11.3 rebounds per game and is second in the PSAC.
- With her high scoring production and board grabs, she is 14th nationally with 15 double doubles this season, ranking her third in the conference.
- This season, Weaver topped her single game rebound record with 20 on two occasions, ranking her third in program history. She recorded those against Lock Haven on November 11 and against Seton Hill on February 19.
- She also topped her single season field goal percentage from last season (.577) to (.654) this season, which ranks her first in program history. Weaver is now also first in program history in career field goal percentage (.616).
- Weaver currently sits in ninth in single season rebounds with 283. On her current track she is expected to move up to sixth place.
- She just surpassed 1,000 career points against Edinboro on March 5. She joins Centrulla and Strayhorn in the 1,000-point club.
- Weaver has totaled 40 steals and posted six blocks this season.
A LOOK INTO STRAYHORN
- Strayhorn was an All-PSAC West First Team Selection.
- She leads the team averaging 34.5 minutes per game and is ranked sixth in the PSAC. She has started all 28 games this season, joining Scott and Centrulla.
- She is shooting .422 from the field and averages 16.0 PPG ranking her fifth in the conference and 88th nationally.
- Currently is ranked 19th in program history in single season points with 447, one point behind last season PSAC Defensive Player of the Year, Rahmena Henderson. Strayhorn is on track to move up to 12th.
- Strayhorn has led the team in scoring 13 times this season, including five 20+ point performances.
- She leads the team in steals with 52 and is ranked 14th in the conference averaging 1.9 SPG.
GRACE CENTRULLA
- Senior forward Grace Centrulla has been a part of the team for two seasons and has made starts in all 57 games.
- Centrulla is averaging 25.9 MPG, 4.9 RPG, 1.8 APG, has totaled 21 steals, and leads the team with 25 blocks. She is shooting .403 from the field and is averaging 6.6. PPG.
- During last season's matchup she grabbed four rebounds, had four assists, and made 5-of-6 field goals.
JANEIRA SCOTT
- Janeira Scott is one of three players that has started all 28 games this season. She is averaging 26.2 MPG, 6.3 PPG, and is shooting .333 from the field.
- Scott leads the team with 70 assists and ranks second with 48 steals. She ranks 19th in the conference averaging 1.9 APG and 17th in SPG.
- She has scored 10+ points on six occasions this season and has led the team is assists 10 times.
ELLIE WILKERSON
- Wilkerson has started 25 of the 26 games she has appeared in. Overall, she is averaging 28.4 MPG, 10.7 PPG, 3.9 RPG, and is shooting .434 from the field.
- She earned PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7 after her impressive performances at Daemen and Edinboro. Wilkerson posted her best performance of the season against Daemen, scoring 20 points on .643 shooting from the field with nine made field goals. For the week, she averaged 17.5 points per game, 33 minutes, and shot better than .500 from the field.
- She ranks fourth on the team with 32 steals and second with 22 blocks. In the past four games she has totaled seven blocks and has recorded at least two steals on 10 occasions.
- Most recently, she scored 16 points against Edinboro in the PSAC Quarterfinals and has totaled 45 points throughout the past four games.
FRESH OFF THE BENCH
- IUP has utilized players off the bench including Lily Jordan, Marin Miller, Madison Zavasky, and Macie Jarrett.
- Freshman Lily Jordan has appeared in all 28 games this season with five starts. She leads the bench in points, shooting .460 from the field and averages 7.2 PPG. Jordan ranks third on the team averaging 4.6 RPG, has totaled 43 assists, 19 steals, and 12 blocks
- Despite no starts, Marin Miller has appeared in all 28 games this season and averaged 20.5 MPG. Miller was a previous All-PSAC East First Team selection last season at Millersville. She is averaging 5.5 PPG, 2.8 RPG, and has totaled 44 assists and 19 steals. Miller is shooting .392 from he field and leads the team in 3PT percentage (.449) making 22-of-49 attempts. Her highest scoring came against UPJ when she scored 24 points on January 15, shooting 9-for-13 from the field.
- Freshman Madison Zavasky has appeared in 20 games this season averaging 13.3 MPG. She is shooting .390 from the field and averages 4.0 PPG.
- Macie Jarrett has appeared in 19 games averaging 7.2 minutes.
