IUP softball splits final day at The Spring Games in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. — The IUP softball team dropped game one of the day 6-1 to Minnesota State Mankato but rebounded with a 7-0 win against American International to close out the Spring Game trip in Florida. 

IUP is now 9-5 overall and held a 6-4 record throughout the Spring Games. 

Game 1 - Minnesota State Mankato

Jordan Sylvia went 2-for-3 at bat and other hits came from Maddie Griffin, Paige Truax, and Reagan Rand. IUP's single run came in the sixth inning and was scored by Madison Pikula. On the mound was Kendall Young who dropped to 5-2 on the season after giving up 12 hits and six runs.

Minnesota scored three early runs in the first inning and another three in the top of the sixth.

IUP managed one run in the bottom of the sixth. Pikula drew a walk and then Griffin singled through the left side. Sylvia singled to center field, which loaded the bases. Truax singled to left field which allowed for Pikula to score, although Minnesota got the third out to leave two on base.

Game 2 - American International

IUP totaled 14 hits and scored seven runs. Griffin had three hits on four at bats and scored two runs. Pikula also had three hits and scored one run. Brianna Pusateri had two hits and two runs. On the mound was Olivia Hillegas who pitched all seven innings and gave up six hits and no runs.

IUP scored their first run in the top of the third inning after consecutive singles and a sacrifice bunt. Truax drew a walk which loaded the bases and then Rand reached on a fielder's choice that sent Griffin to score. IUP closed the top of the inning with an out and two left on base. 

In the fourth, Pikula and Griffin each singled but were left on base after the third out.

Patella scored IUP's second run in the fifth after she began the inning with a single. Truax drew a walk and then Ruby Singleton singled which sent Patella home.

In the top of the sixth, Pusateri singled and then stole second. IUP had three consecutive singles which sent Pusateri to score. Pikula scored on a wild pitch and IUP finished the inning with three left on base. 

In the seventh, Miller, Griffin, and Pusateri all scored runs to secure IUP's 7-0 win over American International.
